Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The Aberdeen IronBirds look for their first series win tonight as they take on the Lowell Spinners (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) in the rubber match of their three-game series. After winning the opener, the IronBirds fell last night by a final score of 9-3. Lowell out-hit Aberdeen 13-6 in the contest. Tonight, right-hander Jake Cowan will get the start for the IronBirds. Cowan retired the first 10 batters he faced in his last start, against the Hudson Valley Renegades, before being touched up for five runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Jason Garcia.

Series Win'

The IronBirds are looking for their first series win of the 2011 season. They've been swept five times, and have lost the other two series two-games-to-one. The Spinners have won two series this year, including a three-game sweep of the Tri-City ValleyCats.

Dudley is Heating Up

IronBirds second baseman Dudley Leonora had two hits in last night's loss to the Spinners. He now has multiple hits in each of the past three games. Leonora is tied for the team lead in doubles with four, and has raised his batting average up to .265.

Mychal is Mashing

Shortstop Mychal Givens has been Aberdeen's hottest hitter this season. A strong June has carried over into July. The former second-round pick is batting .360 in July. He's currently leading the team in batting average, runs scored, hits, stolen bases, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage.

IronBirds Receive Another Draft Pick

Before yesterday's game, the Baltimore Orioles transferred left-handed pitcher Zach Fowler from the Gulf Coast League Orioles to Aberdeen. Fowler was the Orioles' 2011 34th round draft pick. He was drafted following his redshirt junior season at Texas Tech. This past season he was an Academic All-Big 12 first team selection, after going 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 23 relief appearances.

Hitting the Road

The IronBirds will hit the road and head to Troy, NY tomorrow morning to begin a three-game series with Tri-City. Following the three-game set Aberdeen will have its first off-day of the season.
