Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners had opportunities abound Monday night but could not capitalize on 13 walks, leaving 14 men on base en route to an 8-3 loss to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at LeLacheur Park.

Mahoning Valley (8-15) got a pair of runs in the first inning after the Scrappers rallied with two outs. Back-to-back doubles and a pair of wild pitches led to a pair of runs off Spinners' starter Jake Cosart, who had thrown five no-hit innings in his previous start.

The Scrappers added to the lead in the second with a double and triple to lead off the inning, taking a 4-0 lead on a one-out single by Willi Castro.

Lowell (14-10) got a run back in the second on a two out rally of their own. Tucker Tubbs reached on a pitch to the ribs. Tubbs stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, coming around to score on a two-strike single by Jordon Austin to get the Spinners on the board.

After Mahoning Valley chased Cosart with a run in the third, the Spinners got another back in the third. After three straight walks to load the bases, Victor Acosta flew to shallow center. A walk to Chad De La Guerra brought in a run but the Spinners would get no more as Tubbs grounded into a double play to leave them loaded.

It would become a trend as the Spinners left runners on base in each inning as the Scrappers added three to expand their lead to 8-2. The Spinners would then leave them loaded in the eighth and then plate one on an Acosta RBI single before leaving two final runners on base to end the game.

Overall the Spinners walked 13 times, one short of the franchise record, and went just 3-for-18 with runners in scoring position while grounding into three double plays. Luis Basabe walked four times in the game while Austin went 1-for-1 with three walks and an RBI.

Cosart (1-2, 7.88) had his Jekyll and Hyde season continue, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out three over 2.2 innings. Ben Taylor was strong out of the bullpen, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out six in three innings. Danny Zandona was charged with a pair of runs in his inning of work, striking out one, while Enfember Martinez pitched 2.1 innings of blemish free baseball.

The Spinners are off Tuesday before returning to action Wednesday night at LeLacheur. It's Dogman Bobble Head Giveaway, presented by Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union, as the first 1,000 fans will receive a Dogman bobble. In addition, it is NASCAR Night, with appearances from drivers and cars in advance of the races in Loudon. Tickets for the 7:05pm game remain available.
