State College Spikes News Release
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The State College Spikes turned two three times on Tuesday night, but the Vermont Lake Monsters produced 12 hits, six for extra bases, and took a 9-3 decision at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Spikes (22-22) shortstop Moises Castillo was involved in all three double plays, taking the out at second base on first two himself before flipping to second baseman Donivan Williams for a 6-4-3 double play to finish the trifecta.
Vermont (17-27) jumped out in front on Kyle McCann's two-run homer to left field in the first inning, his fourth of the season, and did not look back. The Lake Monsters, who came into the game last in the New York-Penn League in batting average, added a run on McCann's single in the third and another on Kevin Richards's double in the fifth before exploding for four runs in the sixth.
Noah Vaughan's two-run homer, his first of the year and his second hit with the Lake Monsters, was the centerpiece of the sixth. The shot to right field was estimated to have traveled 432 feet, making it the third-longest homer hit at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in the last three seasons.
Pedro Pages drove in a run for the Spikes with a single in the fourth and was the only State College player with multiple hits in the game. Williams plated the Spikes' first run with a fielder's choice in the third. Matt Duce's groundout in the sixth brought in the last State College tally.
State College starter Junior Gonzalez (2-3) took the loss after giving up three runs on six hits, three walks and a hit batsman while striking out two batters over three innings.
Marty Bechina went 4-for-5 with an RBI double in the sixth to help the Vermont offense. McCann drove in a total of four runs as well.
Vermont reliever Leudeny Pineda (1-0) earned the win with five innings of one-run relief. Pineda yielded two hits while striking out six batters.
Wednesday, the Spikes and Lake Monsters meet for the second game of their three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature a pair of right-handers on the hill, as State College sends Enmanuel Solano (1-5) out to face Vermont's Richard Morban (0-1).
Fans will enjoy another Half-Craft Wednesday at the ballpark, presented by 99.5 THE BUS, with half-price 16-oz. craft beers, wine and spirits available from 6-8 p.m. In addition, medium sodas are available at half-price all game long, and fans can get into the park with half-price Outfield Bleacher seats.
