Spinners Sweep Cyclones in Doubleheader Tuesday Night

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - After falling 3-2 on Sunday night to the Staten Island Yankees and enjoying an off-day on Monday, the Lowell Spinners, proud affiliate of the 2018 World Champion Boston Red Sox, went into Tuesday's doubleheader with the Brooklyn Cyclones, affiliate of the New York Mets, looking to get back to their winning ways while also looking to stay undefeated in doubleheaders.
The Spinners (28-15) were able to do so - defeating the Cyclones (25-18) by final scores of 6-2 and 4-3 on Tuesday night at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
Game Two: Spinners 4, Cyclones 3
Heading into the top of the seventh inning, Lowell trailed Brooklyn by a score of 3-2, but not if Kervin Suarez had anything to say about it. Suarez led the inning off by reaching on a throwing error by Cyclones' pitcher Matt Mullenbach.
Mullenbach's throw went over first baseman Gavin Garay's head and into short right field where it was picked up by Raul Beracierta. Beracierta picked the ball up and threw it over third baseman Jose Pedroza's head and into the seats - sending Suarez home and tying the game three runs apiece.
On the very next pitch Samuel Miranda doubled to right field, but advanced to third on a fielding error by Jake Mangum. The Spinners continued their ambush tactics when leadoff hitter Alex Erro lined a sacrifice fly to Mangum, scoring Miranda from third base and giving Lowell a 4-3 lead.
The Spinners got on the board in the first inning when Erro and Cameron Cannon swapped places with consecutive doubles to open the second game of the doubleheader. They made it 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, when Ricardo Cubillan flew into a sacrifice fly-double play that scored Wil Dalton from third base.
The Cyclones came storming back in the bottom half - scoring three runs off Brendan Cellucci, who came in in relief of starter Kelvin Sanchez who was taken out of the game after taking a line drive off his left elbow.
Hildemaro Requena was credited with the win tossing three shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out one. With the win, he improved to 4-1 - only one win behind Spinners' win leaders Bryan Lucas and Yusniel Padron-Artilles (both of whom have five).
Game One: Spinners 6, Cyclones 2
Game one was a different story, as Brooklyn got on the board first on a Jaxx Groshans passed ball - scoring Wilmer Reyes from third base.
The Spinners came storming back in the top of the third inning - tacking on four runs in the frame while also sending 10 men to the plate. Cannon got it started when he doubled home Gilberto Jimenez, who led the inning off with a double, increasing his hit streak to nine games.
After Cannon moved up on a single by Groshans, he was driven home on sacrifice fly by Joe Davis. After Nick Northcut followed with a fly out to right field, Stephen Scott followed with a double to right field - advancing Groshans to third base.
To make matters worse for the Cyclones, Nick Decker followed up with a walk before Marino Campana took the third pitch he saw and blooped it into right field for a two-run single - giving the Spinners a 4-1 lead.
After Mangum drove home Beracierta in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 5-2 Groshans got his shot at redemption when he launched a solo home run over the left field wall on the first pitch he saw for his second home run as a professional and in Brooklyn.
The Spinners are back in action with a single game on Wednesday night - first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
