West Virginia Black Bears News Release
GRANVILLE, W. Va. - After four days away from Monongalia County Ballpark, the West Virginia Black Bears fell to the Staten Island Yankees at home 6-2.
The Black Bears matched the Yankees with eight hits in the contest, but went 2-10 with runners in scoring position as the team dropped its first game of the series.
After a quiet start, Staten Island got things started in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly. The Black Bears responded in the following inning, as RF Will Matthiessen drove a single into right field to tie the game at 1-1.
The Yankees opened up a three-run lead in the top of the fifth inning. A sacrifice bunt, a double, and a groundout brought three visitors around to score and give Staten Island a cushion heading into the back half of the matchup.
SS Jared Triolo did his part to keep the game close, driving home a West Virginia run on a groundout in the bottom of the fifth to put the score at 4-2.
Two innings later, the Yankees added a pair of insurance runs. A home run over the centerfield fence gave the away team a four-run advantage with two innings left to play.
The Black Bears got a nice evening out of a pair of newly acquired arms. LHP Elvis Escobar and RHP Oliver Garcia each tossed a scoreless inning to keep the game close.
Another bright spot for West Virginia was 3B Dean Lockery, who accumulated three hits in his four at-bats. He and 1B Nick Patten were the only two Black Bears with multiple hits in the game.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow evening for game two of the series. West Virginia will be hosting its first ever Fortnite Night with costumes and contests featuring the beloved video game.
First pitch for tomorrow's game is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. For more information on tickets and promotions, visit www.westvirginiablackbears.com.
