State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA -- The Spikes knocked off the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Wednesday evening by the score of 4-1 to sweep the critical two-game series from their division rival. With the win the Spikes improved their record at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to 17-16 after starting the year 7-14 in the friendly confines. Jared Schweitzer and Donovan Solano each went 2-for-4 and were responsible for all four Spikes RBI. With the win, the Spikes kept pace with the Doubledays in the race for the Pinckney Division lead and remain only one game out of first place, as well as a game behind the Oneonta Tigers in the Wild Card chase.
Mahoning Valley drew first blood on Wednesday, scoring an unearned run off of starter Kyle Sadlowski (2-2), but that is the only run the hurler would allow. Over his 6.1 innings of work, Sadlowski allowed only four hits without a walk, while striking out three.
State College drew even in the fourth inning when Schweitzer legged out an infield single that allowed Nathan Southard to score and knot the score at 1-1. The Spikes jumped in front for good an inning later when Schweitzer came through in the clutch yet again, as the former Kansas University star drove in two with a two-out single to give State College the 3-1 lead. The Spikes tacked on an insurance run an inning later with an RBI single from Donovan Solano to make the final score 4-1.
Luke Gregerson tossed two scoreless innings of relief to close out the game and pick up his third save of the year. Nathan Southard continued his hot hitting for the Spikes, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Spikes will close out their four-game home stand with a quick two game set against the Batavia Muckdogs. RHP Gary Daley Jr. will toe the rubber for State College and will be opposed by Darren Byrd (1-0, 4.15) of the Muckdogs. Thursday evening will be Spikes Happy Hour with two dollar draughts and $1.00 off hamburgers from 5:00-7:00pm on the Old State Clothing Co. Fun Deck. Thursday will also be Napoleon Dynamite Night with an appearance by Efren Ramirez, who played Pedro Sanchez in the cult classic. In addition the Spikes will hold a Jersey-Off-The-Back Auction of their Blue & White Jerseys to benefit THON. Great seats are still available and can be purchased over the phone by calling 877-99-SPIKES, logging on to StateCollegeSpikes.com, or by visiting the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park box office.
