Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Ryan Owen tossed seven shutout innings and Brandon Rousseve's two-run single in the third inning led the Hudson Valley Renegades to 5-0 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.
Owen (5-2) gave up just four hits, two infield singles and a pair of doubles, with no walks and eight strikeouts over seven innings for the victory. He threw 83 pitches over the seven innings, 65 for strikes and just 18 balls. Claudio Rodriguez allowed one hit with two strikeouts in two innings of relief for his first save of the year.
The Renegades got all the runs they would need in the third inning on Rousseve's two-run single off Aaron Jackson (3-5). Scott Gummo and Jairo de la Rosa led off the inning with back-to-back singles, then after a sacrifice bunt and strikeout, Rousseve bounced a 2-2 pitch up the middle into centerfield to give Hudson Valley the 2-0 lead.
That would be all that the Renegades would get in the game off Jackson, who came on in relief in the second inning and allowed just the two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings. Jackson, who had started 10 of his previous 11 games, came into the game to start the second inning after Glenn Gibson pitched a perfect first inning.
Gibson, the Washington Nationals fourth-round pick in the 2006 draft, made his professional debut with Vermont on Wednesday. The 18-year-old out of Long Island, NewYork got a strikeout looking, groundout and strikeout swinging in the the top of the first inning.
The game stayed 2-0 until the Renegades scored three runs off Vermont relievers in the ninth inning. Matt Spring had an RBI double off Rudy Garza and then Hudson Valley scored two unearned runs on a three-base throwing error by pitcher Yader Peralta on a sacrifice bunt attempt for a 5-0 Renegade lead.
Rousseve was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Gummo 2-for-4 with two runs for Hudson Valley (28-38), which has two straight shutout wins over Vermont. The Renegades also blanked the Lake Monsters 1-0 on August 6th at Hudson Valley and have a 23-inning scoreless streak against Vermont.
Guzman had two doubles for Vermont (21-46), which was shutout for the seventh time overall and for the third time in the last eight games. The Lake Monsters have now lost a season-high tying five straight games overall and have now lost 11 of its last 12 games at Centennial Field. Wednesday's game was played in front of just 1,516 fans, the second smallest crowd in Vermont's 13-year history.
The Lake Monsters have just two home games remaining with single games against Hudson Valley on Thursday and Friday nights starting at 7:05 pm. Thursday is Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Night with Zach Baldwin getting the start for Vermont.
