State College Spikes News Release

BATAVIA, NY-Aaron Baker came up just a home run shy of the cycle as the State College Spikes split a doubleheader against the Batavia Muckdogs on Monday at Dwyer Stadium, taking game one, 5-2, and dropping game two, 4-1.

Baker collected a triple, single and double, in that order, in his first three at-bats of game one. In his fourth plate appearance, however, the Oklahoma alumnus was intentionally walked. Baker ended the two games by going 3-for-6.

Pat Irvine drove in two runs over the two games, putting his season total at 37 and giving him sole possession of third place in the New York-Penn League in RBI. Ty Summerlin had three hits over both games, as well.

Tyler Cox (8-2) started game one for State College (32-31) and jumped into a tie for first in the NYPL in wins by allowing only one run on six hits and four walks over six innings. Cox also struck out four in the effort.

Victor Black (1-1) took the loss for the Spikes in game two after allowing three runs, but only one earned, on three hits and a walk while striking out four.

Justin Smith (0-1) started for Batavia (32-31) in game one and was dealt the loss after allowing three runs in four innings. Justin Edwards (3-2) got the win for the Muckdogs in game two with two scoreless innings over the fifth and sixth frames.

Tuesday, the Spikes head to Russell Diethrick Park in Jamestown, NY to take on the Jamestown Jammers in the first game of a three-game set at 7:05 p.m. State College right-hander Phillip Irwin (1-1) will get the nod for the Spikes against an as yet undetermined Jammers starter.

Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 3WZ at 95.3 FM starting at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Diethrick Park.
