State College Spikes News Release

NILES, OH - The State College Spikes' bats could not get rolling on Saturday night as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers held them to three hits and took a 3-0 decision at Eastwood Field.

State College (37-38) got base hits from Brock Holt, David Rubinstein and Miguel Mendez, but could not advance a runner past third base. Mahoning Valley (49-26) scored the first run of the game in the first inning, then used a wild pitch and a squeeze play bunt by Argenis Martinez to score two more runs in the seventh.

Phillip Irwin (1-2) took the loss in his last start of the 2009 season, going three innings and allowing a run on two hits and a walk while striking out two.

Mahoning Valley starter Brett Brach (5-2) earned the win after throwing six innings of three-hit ball and striking out five Spikes batters. Tyler Sturdevant (3) earned the save with three innings of hitless relief to finish the game.

Sunday, the Spikes take the field for the final time in the 2009 season as they face the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Eastwood Field with a 5:05 p.m. start. State College will send right-hander Jeff Inman (0-0) out for his second start as a professional. Inman will be opposed by Mahoning Valley right-hander Preston Guilmet (6-5). The Spikes can finish at .500 for the second time in franchise history with a win.

Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 3WZ at 95.3 FM starting at 4:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Eastwood Field.

The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on StateCollegeSpikes.com, provided by 95.3-3WZ.
