STATE COLLEGE SPIKES (4-5) @ JAMESTOWN JAMMERS (4-5)

Thursday, June 28 -- 7:05 PM

Russell E. Diethrick Park - Jamestown, NY

Game #10 / Road Game # 6

RHP Dionis Rodriguez (1-0, 1.29) vs. LHP Chris Ingoglia (0-1, 13.50)

TONIGHT'S STARTER: RHP Dionis Rodriguez will make his second start for the Spikes this evening, after spending some time earlier this season with the Hickory Crawdads (SAL - A) and the Lynchburg Hillcats (CAR - A). In five games with Hickory, Rodriguez went 0-2 and had a 10.80 ERA. In his first start with the Spikes, which was also against Jamestown, Rodriguez got the win after allowing only one run through seven innings of work. Prior to this season, Dionis had a career record of 11-16, but had struck out 246 batters in 196.2 career innings of work. Conversely, he had walked only 46 batters.

TONIGHT'S OPPONENT: LHP Chris Ingoglia will take the mound for the Jammers in a repeat matchup of the Spikes 9-1 victory on Sunday. Ingoglia allowed three runs, on two hits over his 2.0 innings of work. Ingoglia was the Marlins' 18th round selection in the 2007 draft out of Stetson University (FL). Ingoglia had a long and distinguished run with the Hatters, that culminated in a highly decorated senior year. The left-hander earned three Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week awards in 2007 and was a first team all-conference selection. He finished fourth on Stetson's all-time wins list (30) while ranking fifth in strikeouts (286), 9th in fewest walks per nine innings (2.86), fourth in games pitched (83), tied for first in games started (61), fourth in innings pitched (380.1), 15th in ERA (3.81).

LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Spikes collected a franchise-high 19 hits as they topped the Batavia Muckdogs by the score of 10-6. The Spikes lead 10-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but two Spikes pitchers allowed four runs without surrendering a hit, as six walks, a hit batsman, two pass balls and a wild pitch allowed the Muckdogs to rally, but Ronald Uviedo got the final out of the game with the bases loaded to pick up the save. Brian Tracy (1-0) got the win after tossing three perfect innings of relief. OF James Barksdale rallied the Spikes offense, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three stolen bases on the evening. Smelin Perez went 3-for-6 to raise his batting average to .400.

WE HARDLY KNEW ‘YE: RHP Christian Castorri will be the first player to move on from the Spikes during the 2007 season. Castorri will join the Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League tomorrow. Castorri was 0-0, with a 1.59 ERA in three games for the Spikes.

YOU WIN SOME: In State College's four wins this season, the Spikes are hitting .338 (51-151) with 30 runs scored. Of the 51 hits as a team, 18 of them have been extra-base hits in team victories.

YOU LOSE SOME: In the team's five losses, the Spikes are hitting .211 (34-161) as a team with seven runs scored. Of the 34 hits, only seven of them are extra base hits in games that the team loses.

ALL OR NOTHING: With last night's 19 hit performance, the Spikes raised their overall team average to .272, which is best the league. The Spikes lead the NYPL with 312 at-bats, 10 more at-bats than the second place team (Oneonta, 302). They also have a league best 85 hits, 11 more than Oneonta. However, the Spikes also lead the league in strikeouts with 79, which averages out to be once every four at-bats. State College is also last in the league with only 22 walks.

MEN OF STEAL: The State College Spikes entered last night's game in last place as a team with only one stolen base. That all changed last night however, as James Barksdale stole three bases and Austin McClune added another swipe to give the Spikes a total of five on the season. The Spikes were also caught stealing twice last night to bring their league-leading total to seven.

AT HOME ON THE ROAD: The Spikes have played four games at home and five on the road and the team has established themselves as road warriors to this point. At home ,the Spikes are hitting .206 (26- 126), conversely the team is hitting .317(59-186) on the road. In addition, the Spikes pitching staff has a 3.32 ERA on the road and a 4.25 ERA at home.

ALIVE AT FIVE: Over the last five games, the Spikes have hit .315 as a team. In those same games, IF Smelin Perez is hitting .500 (10-20) with seven RBI, and OF Marcus Davis is hitting .412 (7-for-17) with two home runs and four RBI.

RECORD BREAKING BREAKOUT: Last night's game in Batavia saw several franchise records get set. The 10 runs in a game matched the all-time record, which was set three times last season (July 5, July 20, August 28). Also, the 19 hits in a game broke the previous mark of 16 set on July 20 at Lowell. The Spikes also tied the all-time record with four steals in a game and OF James Barksdale tied Willian Sandoval's mark of three steals in a game. Unfortunately, the Spikes also set another mark as the 10 walks in a game broke the previous mark of eight, which was set on July 28 against Auburn.
