State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA-Staten Island scored seven runs in the ninth inning to power past the Spikes, 13-10, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Wednesday night.
State College (11-41) entered the inning with the lead, 10-6. But after drawing within a run, 10-9, Staten Island (34-21) saw Ray Kruml knocked in two runners with a single just out of the grasp of State College's Chad Rice to give the Yankees the lead. David Adams then completed the Yankee comeback with a two-run homer to left off of Mike Williams (1-1).
A crowd of 5,018 was in attendance as the Spikes donned special pink jerseys on Paint the Park Pink Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The jerseys were then presented to winners of the Jersey off the Back silent auction on the field after the game. It was the 16th crowd of 5,000 or more for a Spikes game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park since it opened in 2006.
Rice delivered a big hit for the Spikes in the seventh inning with a bases-clearing double off of the right field fence to give the Spikes a four-run lead headed to the ninth. Rice ended the game 2-for-4.
Kyle Morgan smashed a three-run homer off the top of the 18.55-foot fence in right field in the third inning. It was Morgan's first homer as a professional. Morgan scored three runs to go with his three RBI.
Chase d'Arnaud and Ciro Rosero each collected a pair of hits for the Spikes, who ended the game with 13 hits in total.
Williams took the loss after allowing Kruml's two-run single and the homer to Adams.
Josue Selenes (4-0) got the win for Staten Island with 1.1 innings of one-hit pitching. Selenes allowed no runs and struck out one.
Yankees switch-pitcher Pat Venditte earned his New York-Penn League-leading 15th save with a perfect ninth. Venditte threw both left-handed and right-handed in the ninth inning, alternating from right to left and back against the three Spikes batters he faced.
Thursday night, the Spikes and Yankees conclude their three-game series with a 7:05 game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College sends right-hander Brian Leach (1-0) to the mound for his fifth start of the year. Leach will face Staten Island right-hander Casey Erickson (1-0).
The Zooperstars will entertain the crowd during Thursday night's game. It will also be Singles Night at the park, with a Spikes Bachelor Auction running during the game to benefit the American Heart Association.
