Former Steelers great to toss out first pitch

Former Pittsburgh Steeler defensive end Fred Anderson, who won two Super Bowl rings with the Steelers of the late 1970's, will throw out the first pitch Thursday night as the State College Spikes take on the Staten Island Yankees at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in a 7:05 p.m. matchup.

Anderson, the father of current Spikes' first baseman Calvin Anderson, played five years in the NFL for the Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks from 1978-1982. Fred Anderson was a member of the Super Bowl champion teams in 1978 and 1979 as the Steelers took home their second pair of world titles in the 1970's.

A native of Toppenish, Washington, Anderson played his college football at Oregon State University before joining the famed "Steel Curtain" defense and playing all 16 regular season games in 1978. After playing alongside Hall of Famers Jack Ham, Jack Lambert, "Mean" Joe Greene, and Mel Blount, Anderson played three years for the Seahawks, where he played 22 games over three seasons.

"The Spikes are honored to have Fred Anderson, a former Pittsburgh Steeler, here at the park for this series," Spikes General Manager Rick Janac said. "We've all seen Calvin become a fan favorite, and we're excited for him to be able to play in front of his family."

Along with his wife of thirty years, Darla, Anderson was also in attendance for the final two games the Spikes played in Aberdeen before making the trip up to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
