STATE COLLEGE, PA - Wearing special Pink Cheetah Jerseys to help raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, the State College Spikes defeated the West Virginia Black Bears in comeback fashion, 5-3, on Sunday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Elier Rodriguez delivered the biggest hit for the Spikes (28-14) with a bases-loaded, three-run double in the third inning as State College kept hold of the best record in the New York-Penn League.

The Spikes' pink jerseys went up for bids in a Jersey-off-the-Back Auction during the game. The auction raised over $4,500 for the Breast Care Center at Mount Nittany Medical Center through The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center as part of Paint the Park Pink Night, presented by Mount Nittany Health.

State College jumped out in front in the opening frame when Mick Fennell's groundout brought in a run. However, West Virginia (20-22) responded with Kevin Krause's two-run homer to left in the second, and added a run in the third thanks to a Sandy Santos single.

The Spikes regained the lead with a burst of two-out offense, with singles by Andy Young and Vince Jackson followed by a Jeremy Martinez walk to load the bases for Rodriguez's double.

Back-to-back two-base hits for Ricardo Bautista and Danny Hudzina plated another State College run in the sixth, ending the scoring.

The Spikes received a bullpen-led effort on the mound after originally scheduled starter Dewin Perez was scratched. Harley Holt delivered three innings on the mound to begin the game, followed by 2 1/3 scoreless innings from Bob Wheatley (3-0). Wheatley allowed just two walks and a hit batsman while striking out one batter for the win.

Brady Bowen then tossed 2 2/3 shutout frames before Eric Carter (5) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

West Virginia starter James Marvel (3-5) took the loss after giving up four runs, three of them earned, on four hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings. Marvel struck out four batters on the night.

Austin Meadows, the outfielder rated the second-best prospect in the Pirates system according to MLBPipeline.com, joined the Black Bears on a rehab assignment, but did not play in Sunday's game.

Monday, the Spikes and Black Bears continue their series with a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Right-hander Jordan Hicks (0-0), who joined the Spikes on Sunday, will make his first New York-Penn League start in the game. West Virginia will send right-hander Danny Beddes (3-1) to the mound.
