Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters rallied from a two-run deficit with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 4-3 come-from-behind New York-Penn League victory over the Connecticut Tigers Sunday evening in front of a season high 3,385 at historic Centennial Field.
Luke Persico got the eighth inning rally started with a leadoff double and scored one-out later on a Luis Barrera RBI double to leftfield to cut the Tigers lead to 3-2. Barrera then stole third base and scored on a Eli White sacrifice fly to center on a 1-2 pitch to tie the game 3-3. Nate Mondou followed with a walk and advanced all the way around to third base on a wild pitch before scoring the eventual winning run when Miguel Mercedes potential inning-ending groundball to shortstop was mishandled by Anthony Pereira.
Yordy Alejo came on and tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his third save of the season as the Lake Monsters won their second straight after a six-game losing streak. It was also Vermont's third win this season when trailing after seven innings.
It was a pitchers duel through five innings between starters Brandon Bailey of Vermont and Kyle Funkhouser for Connecticut. Bailey gave up a leadoff single in the first inning, but retired 15 of the next 16 batters faced including the final 10 order (allowing just a two-out walk in the second) in his five scoreless innings. He needed just 49 pitches to get through five, including a six-pitch third, five-pitch fourth and seven-pitch fifth. Funkhouser gave up just two hits with four strikeouts in his four innings.
Connecticut got on the board first in the sixth as when Daniel Woodrow reached on a an error and later scored an unearned run on a Joey Havrilak RBI double. The Lake Monsters tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on Tyler Ramirez one-out double and White two-out RBI double. Vermont had just six hits in the game, but five of them were doubles.
The Tigers took a 3-1 lead in the seventh with a pair of runs scoring on a one-out bases loaded fielding error by second baseman Eric Marinez, but reliever Jesus Zambrano got out of further trouble with an inning-ending double play. Zambrano (2-1) allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits over three innings to pick up the victory, while John Schreiber three runs (two earned) on two hits over 1 2/3 innings for the loss.
Vermont (19-23) and Connecticut (22-20) will play the second of the three-game series at Centennial Field on Monday night beginning at 7:05 pm before Vermont wraps up the six-game homestand with the Tigers at a special start time of 11:05 a.m. on Tuesday.
