BURLINGTON, VT - The Connecticut Tigers (22-20) gave up three runs in the eighth inning to drop Sunday's matchup to Vermont 4-3. The Tigers have lost seven straight games on the road after the loss.
The game was a pitcher's duel for the first five innings, Connecticut starter Kyle Funkhouser pitched a career-high four innings, giving up two hits, no runs and punching out four. He went toe-to-toe with Brandon Bailey who went five scoreless frames, allowing a hit and striking out two.
The Tigers broke through first with a run in the sixth inning. Daniel Woodrow reached on an error by the pitcher Jesus Zambrano, swiped second, his second stolen base of the game, and scored on an RBI double from Joey Havrilak. The double extended Havrilak's reach base streak to eight games.
After Vermont tied it up in the sixth, Connecticut regained the lead in the seventh. Loading the bases for Daniel Woodrow, the Tigers centerfielder hit a soft line drive to second that ate up Eric Marinez, which allowed the Tigers to plate a pair and lead 3-1.
The game remained that way until the eighth when the Lake Monsters got to John Schreiber. A double from Luke Persico started the inning and he scored after an RBI double from Luis Barrera. Barrera then swiped third base and came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Eli White. Schreiber then exited after walking Nate Mondou.
Eduardo Jimenez came out of the pen to try and keep it a 3-3 game. Jimenez though uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Mondou to get all the way over to third base. One batter later, Miguel Mercedes hit a groundball to shortstop that kicked up on Pereira and allowed Mercedes to reach and Mondou to score the winning run.
The Tigers seek to even the series up tomorrow with Alfred Gutierrez starting for Connecticut. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. from Centennial Field.
