
Mahoney, Yankees Shut out Doubledays

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost the series opener to the Staten Island Yankees, 7-0, on Sunday. Staten Island starting pitcher Kolton Mahoney pitched a complete game-shutout for the Yankees in the win.
The Yankees (23-18) scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Chris Godinez singled. Drew Bridges then singled to put runners on first and second base. Timmy Robinson followed with a single that scored Godinez to put the Yankees up 1-0.
Staten Island added to its lead in the fourth inning. With one out, Bridges singled. Robinson then popped out to first base. With Dom Thompson-Williams batting, a wild pitch allowed Bridges to move to second base. Thompson-Williams then singled to right field to score Bridges and give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. With Angel Aguilar batting, Thompson-Williams stole second base. Aguilar followed with a single to left field. Thompson-Williams scored, and Aguilar advanced to second base on the throw home as the Yankees extended their lead to three, 3-0. Kendall Coleman then walked to put runners on first and second. Jerry Seitz followed with a double to left field that scored Aguilar, giving Staten Island a 4-0 advantage.
The Yankees extended their lead in the sixth. Thompson-Williams and Aguilar both walked to begin the inning. After Coleman flied out to right field, Seitz doubled to score Thompson-Williams and Aquilar to put the Yankees up by six, 6-0.
Staten Island brought one more run home in the seventh inning. Godinez worked a walk to lead off the inning. Bridges followed with a double to put runners on second and third base. A pitch then hit Robinson to load the bases. Thompson-Williams followed with a sacrifice fly out to right field. Godinez tagged up and scored from third on the play to give the Yankees a 7-0 lead.
The Doubledays (18-24) were held scoreless in the game despite six hits. Auburn left five runners on base and went hitless in five at bats with runners in scoring position.
Auburn and Staten Island will meet on Monday night for the second game of a three-game series. Right-hander Luis Reyes will be on the mound for the Doubledays, while the Yankees will send right-hander Jonathan Padilla to the mound. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
