Spikes Continue Home Run Frenzy, But Fall to Muckdogs, 8-3

State College Spikes News Release

BATAVIA, N.Y. - Brady Whalen smashed his second home run in as many night, and Andres Luna went deep for this first State College Spikes home run, but the Batavia Muckdogs used a big seventh inning to down the Spikes, 8-3, on Sunday afternoon at Dwyer Stadium.

Whalen's two-run blast to left field in the third inning gave State College (9-14) a 3-1 lead. The Spikes' first baseman, who hit his first homer of the year on Saturday to right field as a left-handed hitter, hit his second as a right-handed hitter on Sunday.

Luna's solo home run to left field started the third for the Spikes and tied the game at 1-1. State College has now hit six home runs as a team during the first five games of the six-game road trip after going without a homer in the 16 games prior to the New York swing.

Batavia (11-11) opened the scoring in the first when Sean Reynolds hit a sinking line drive to right field that was originally ruled to have been caught by State College right fielder Justin Toerner but was reversed, after further discussion, to an RBI single.

The Muckdogs then scored in the fourth on Igor Baez's two-out single to center, and tied the game when Reynolds hit a solo home run to right field in the sixth.

In the eighth, Batavia plated five runs to break the game open, with Brayan Hernandez's RBI single and a two-run double from Denis Karas serving as the key base hits.

State College starter Angel Rondon (0-4) took the loss after being charged with four runs on seven hits and two walks over six-plus innings of work. Rondon also struck out three batters during his mound tenure.

Batavia reliever Dylan Cyphert (1-0), a native of Clarion, Pennsylvania, picked up the win in relief. Cyphert yielded two hits and a walk while striking over 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Spikes and Muckdogs will meet in the rubber match of their three-game series at Dwyer Stadium on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. State College will have right-hander Jim Voyles (1-0) on the mound. Voyles tossed seven one-run innings for the win in the opener of the Spikes' road trip at Auburn on the Fourth of July.

Batavia will send right-hander Bryce Howe (0-0) to the mound for his first start of the season.

After the series against the Muckdogs, and an off day on the New York-Penn League slate on Tuesday, the Spikes are home at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a six-game homestand from Wednesday, July 11 to Monday, July 16, with three games each against the Vermont Lake Monsters (Oakland Athletics) and Tri-City ValleyCats (Houston Astros).
