CT Tigers Win Fourth Straight, 5-2 in Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Connecticut Tigers (11-12) picked up their fourth win in a row and ninth in the last 11 games thanks to three errors by the Vermont Lake Monsters (11-12) and four scoreless innings of relief in a 5-2 win at Centennial Field on Sunday.

After giving up two sacrifice fly RBIs in the second, Tigers starter Jose Vasquez (Win, 3-1) retired nine Lake Monsters in a row to finish out his five innings with two strikeouts. The two runs charged to Vasquez were unearned after two errors by Yomar Valentin, who made his second start at second base.

The Tigers took advantage of two Vermont errors in the fourth. Following a successful double steal by Eric De La Rosa and Ryan Karstetter, shortstop Jose King picked up his team-leading ninth RBI on a single to center that scored De La Rosa and Karstetter followed him home courtesy of a fielding error in center field. Two batters later, Reece Hampton tallied his first RBI with Connecticut on an RBI single to right that gave the Tigers a 5-2 cushion.

Connecticut held Vermont off the scoreboard through the final 7 1/3 innings. Mitchell Stalsberg (Hold, 1) stranded the bases loaded in the sixth, Drew Crosby (Hold, 2) stranded two more Lake Monsters in the seventh, and Yaya Chentouf (Save, 3) remained perfect in save opportunities as a pro with just nine pitches to retire Vermont in the ninth.

For the second straight night, Silverio led the Tigers at the plate with two hits. Through the first two games of the series in Vermont, the 19-year-old catcher is 5-for-9 with a run scored, two RBIs, two doubles, and a stolen base. King also went 2-for-4 on Sunday with an RBI and a run scored.

Tigers designated hitter Sam McMillan tallied the lone extra-base hit with a first-inning triple and scored on a Darwin Alvarado sac fly RBI. Connecticut added pressure to Vermont's defense with a season-high five stolen bases including a steal of second by Valentin that forced a wild throw into center field and allowed Shane Cooper to score in the second inning.

Following their ninth win in the last 11 games, the Tigers are tied for second in the Stedler Division standings with the Lake Monsters, just two games behind the first-place Tri-City ValleyCats. On Monday, the Tigers play their final regular season game in Vermont as right-handed starter Gio Arriera (1-1, 4.03) pitches against Vermont righty Adam Reuss (0-1, 4.80) at 7:05 p.m.
