Batavia Muckdogs News Release
BATAVIA, NY- Despite two home runs by the State College Spikes, Batavia rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to take game two against the Spikes by an 8-3 final score.
The game got off to an interesting start right in the bottom of the first. Michael Donadio smoked a ball to center field, but not fielded cleanly by the center fielder Wadye Ynfante. And Donadio got credited with a double. Then Sean Reynolds hit a fly ball to right field. Initially, Justin Toerner had been ruled with making a diving catch that ended the inning. Batavia's coaching staff argued the call and stayed on the field despite the Spikes' defense having gone back to the dugout. The call was then reversed, and there was an appeal to see if Donadio had crossed the plate. Since the inning had ended, there was no guarantee that he crossed the plate to score since it had become a hit for Reynolds. The run would stand, and Batavia would end the first inning with a 1-0 lead.
State College would not roll over though. In the third inning they put up three runs. All three come off of home runs. The first was a leadoff long ball. Andres Luna sent a no-doubter over the left field wall to tie the game at one. The next batter Edwin Figuera sent a single into center field to keep the offense going. Two outs later, another long home run to left came from the bat of Brady Whalen. After three innings the Muckdogs found themselves down 3-1.
Sean Reynolds scored one of his three runs after drawing a one-out walk in the fourth. Gunnar Schubert advanced him to third base with a single. Igor Baez brought Reynolds in with one of his two RBI singles in the contest. The Muckdogs still trailed 3-2 after the fourth, though.
The game would get tied just two innings later though. Reynolds again would once again do the damage. He led off the sixth inning with a towering home run to right field. He wasn't afraid to admire his work after either, providing a big bat flip. Batavia would bring even more offense just one inning later.
All nine batters would come to the plate in the seventh inning for Batavia. Gerardo Nunez started things off with a single up the middle. Matt Brooks used a sacrifice bunt to move him over, Batavia looking to force Nunez (who was the go-ahead run) across the plate. They did just that as Brayan Hernandez hit a single to break the tie. Donadio drew a walk immediately after to bring up Reynolds. Reynolds was then hit by a pitch in the at bat that followed his bat-flip-worthy homer. After a slow walk down to the bag, Denis Karas brought two of the three runners in with a double to the right-center gap. One more run would cross thanks to another Baez RBI single to make the score 8-3 after the seventh inning.
The five runs in an inning tied a season high for the Muckdogs' offense, and Reynolds' three runs scored are also a team high in a single game.
Batavia's bullpen kept the Spikes scoreless for the final six innings of the game. They would muster just five total hits, all coming across different innings.
The rubber match comes on Monday night against the Spikes. It's a 7:05 p.m. first pitch from Dwyer Stadium.
