State College Spikes News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The State College Spikes overcame a 4-0 first-inning deficit with the help of some Williamsport Crosscutters miscues, and Andrew Moore was dominant in relief to help propel the Spikes to their third consecutive win as they defeated the Crosscutters, 6-4, on Wednesday night at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
Moore stabilized the Spikes' (3-4) mount situation with four scoreless innings beginning in the fourth. The right-hander out of Chipola (Fla.) College, who is on his way to Middle Tennessee State, struck out nine batters, the most for any State College hurler in one outing this season. Moore yielded just two hits during his tenure on the hill to earn the win.
Moore's whiff total was just one shy of the 10 posted by Trenton's Dylan Heid on Monday for the most in a single MLB Draft League appearance thus far.
The Spikes (3-4) started digging themselves out of the early hole in the second inning when Kenny Piper reached base on an error, took second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a groundout, and came home on another passed ball.
Tyler Heckert then launched a 410-foot solo home run to left field, his second of the season, to trim the deficit to 4-2 in the third inning.
In the sixth, the Spikes plated a pair of runs to tie it up at 4-4 with the benefit of just one hit, a leadoff single by Michael Slaten. A combination of three walks, the latest drawn by Heckert with the bases loaded, two wild pitches and a bases-loaded hit batsman in the person of Cameron Lee enabled the Spikes to knot the contest.
State College moved ahead in the seventh by taking advantage of two more Williamsport (6-2) errors, part of a four-error night for the Crosscutters. Piper singled and took second on a fielding error, then moved to third on a Mael Zan infield single before taking advantage of third baseman Chaz Salter's errant return throw to the pitcher to scurry home.
In the eighth, the Spikes added an insurance run when Lee scored on an error committed while Marques Paige was laying down a sacrifice bunt.
Jack Goonan (1) shut down the Crosscutters in the ninth, yielding two walks but no runs, to earn his first save in the MLB Draft League.
Williamsport reliever Ryan Velazquez (0-1) picked up the loss after allowing two unearned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one batter.
Thursday, the Spikes and Crosscutters continue their three-game series as the location shifts to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 6:35 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Jared Kengott (0-1) from Emporia State in Kansas, who struck out eight batters in his first start of the MLB Draft League season, going for State College against Williamsport left-hander Jacob Smith (1-0).
