Spikes Bested by Tigers, 4-0

NORWICH, CT - The State College Spikes outhit the Connecticut Tigers on Wednesday, but Blaise Salter knocked in every one of the Tigers' runs as the Spikes dropped a 4-0 decision in a day game at Thomas J. Dodd Stadium.

Salter began the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning off State College (18-8) starter Dewin Perez (2-1), and then produced a two-run single in the third to complete the scoring.

The Spikes had several opportunities to score in the game, but hit into a season-most four double plays to dash several of their chances.

Dylan Tice and Ricardo Bautista each collected a pair of hits for State College, while Tommy Edman stole his sixth base of the year.

The loss ended a string of seven straight series victories for the Spikes, but State College still holds the best record in the New York-Penn League.

Perez took the loss, yielding four runs on a total of four hits and two walks. The southpaw added five strikeouts in his first starting assignment of the year after going 2-0 with a save and a 1.10 ERA over five relief appearances.

Spencer Trayner then delivered two scoreless innings with three hits and a walk against a strikeout on his record. Eric Carter retired all three batters he faced, one via strikeout, to finish the game on the hill for the Spikes.

Connecticut (17-9) starter Kyle Funkhouser allowed three hits over three innings of work before giving way to Ryan Castellanos (4-2), who earned the win. Castellanos gave up five hits while striking out two batters over four innings.

Thursday, the Spikes return home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to start a three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians). The 7:05 p.m. opener of the set will feature left-hander John Kilichowski (0-1), who has not allowed a run over his first 10 professional innings, on the mound for State College. Mahoning Valley will go with right-hander Triston McKenzie (2-2), who has allowed just one earned run over 27 2/3 innings for a 0.33 ERA.

Fans can enjoy the return of $1 Beer Thursday, presented by BIG Froggy 101. 12-ounce domestic draft beers will be just $1 apiece from 6-8 p.m.

It's also Salute to Superheroes Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Fans are encourages to wear the gear of their favorite superheroes as the first 1,000 fans through the gates when they open at 6 p.m. will receive a Superhero T-Shirt Giveaway presented by McClure Mechanical Services. The T-shirts come in two varieties, so fans have the choice of Captain Ike or the Iron Spike when coming through the gates.

The big weekend at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park also includes Ghostbusters Night featuring a "State Puft Marshmallow Men"-Themed Jersey-off-the-Back-Auction presented by PSECU to benefit Children's Miracle Network on Friday, and the return of the Cowboy Monkey Rodeo presented by Stone Valley Construction, LLC on Saturday.

Plus, Pokémon GO players can participate in a different kind of catch at the ballpark on Friday. Fanatics of the newest gaming sensation can get a $5 ticket discount, plus entry to the ballpark at 5 p.m., with the code "ASH."

The 7:05 p.m. game on Friday vs. Mahoning Valley Scrappers will also allow Pokémon GO players to access Medlar Field at Lubrano Park's two PokeStops, and special Lure Modules will be dropped throughout the night to help increase fans' Pokémon GO collections.
