Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

FISHKILL, NY - Timely hitting and a seventh-inning outburst broke open a close game Wednesday night at Dutchess Stadium as the Hudson Valley Renegades overwhelmed the West Virginia Black Bears 10-3 to take the rubber game of their three-game series.

The Black Bears started the scoring with two out and no one on in the second. Leftfielder Hunter Owen singled, then moved to second on a wild pitch. That's when catcher Arden Pabst laced an RBI triple to the left-centerfield gap to give West Virginia a 1-0 lead.

West Virginia had a chance to expand upon their lead in the top of the third. Back-to-back singles put runners at the corners with one out when Renegades catcher Jose Rojas came to the rescue. With rightfielder Jordan George standing in for the Black Bears, Rojas fired to third to pickoff the baserunner Clark Eagan for out number one. After George lined out, Rojas proceeded to throw out the firstbase runner Stephan Alemais trying to steal second. Despite two hits, the Renegades faced only three hitters in the inning.

Hudson Valley squandered a great chance to take the lead in the third. A single by rightfielder Landon Cray and a double by third baseman Jon Popadics put runners at second and third with none out. However, a groundout, shallow flyout, and strikeout got the Black Bears out of the jam.

The Renegades eventually tied the game in the fourth. First baseman Nate Lowe and designated hitter Jim Haley led off with singles to put runners at the corners with no one out. Following a shallow flyout, Rojas drove in a run with a groundout to third.

West Virginia retook the lead in the next inning. Owen led off with a double, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Pabst. After that, second baseman Nick King stepped in a grounded out to second on a great diving stop by Miles Mastrobuoni to give the Black Bears a 2-1 lead.

Hudson Valley however, would take control of the game with a three-run bottom-half. With one out, Black Bears starter Stephan Meyer lost control by hitting the next two batters to put runners at first and second with one out. That's when leftfielder Garrett Whitley roped a triple into left-centerfield to score both runners and give the Renegades a 3-2 lead. Lowe followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Whitley and give Hudson Valley a two-run lead.

The Renegades then put the game away with a six-run seventh inning, their single-largest run output in an inning this season. Two singles, an out and a walk loaded the bases with one out when Lowe drew another walk to force in a run. Haley stepped in and hit a ground ball that was booted by the third baseman William Craig who then proceeded to throw the ball wide of first. Craig was given two errors on the play as two runs scored to give Hudson Valley a 7-2 advantage. With runners at the corners with one out, Mastrobuoni looped a base-hit to center that bounced over the head of Eagan to the wall to score two runs. Mastrobuoni wound up at third with a triple and the Renegades led 9-2. Following an out, Mastrobuoni scored on a single to center by Cray to give the Renegades their largest lead of the game at 10-2. In all, Hudson Valley sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs, four of which were earned.

West Virginia scored a meaningless run in the eighth on a one-out bases loaded walk to designated hitter Ty Moore. However, reliever Brandon Lawson got Owen to ground into a 6-3 double play to end the inning with the Renegades on top 10-3.

Hudson Valley had 10 hits on the night and were paced three hitters with two hits. Lowe went 2-3 with a single, double, two RBI and two runs scored. Cray went 2-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Popadics went 2-4 with a double and run scored as well.

Owen led the Black Bears attack by going 2-3 with a single, double and two runs scored.

Getting the win for the Renegades was starter Eduar Lopez (3-1) after he went five innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three. West Virginia starter Stephan Meyer (1-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in six innings of work.

The Renegades head to Staten Island to begin the first of a three-game home-and-home series with the Yankees tomorrow evening. First-pitch is scheduled for 7:00. Southpaw Brock Burke (1-1, 3.20 ERA) will go for the Renegades against a to-be-determined pitcher for the Yankees. Hudson Valley will return home Friday for game two of the series against Staten Island. First-pitch is slated for 7:05. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
