Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
ABERDEEN, MD - July 12, 2016 - A two-out rally and a crucial home run propelled the Brooklyn Cyclones to a 6-1 win over the Aberdeen Ironbirds on Tuesday night at Ripken Stadium.
For the second straight evening the Cyclones (12-13) used a crucial two-out homer run to turn the tide and defeat the Ironbirds (10-15). Second baseman Nick Sergakis delivered the key blow, blasting a three-run shot into the visitor's bullpen in left to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth. Strong pitching from Brooklyn starter Erik Manoah and reliever Raul Jacobson kept the Cyclones in front the rest of the way and extended the team's win streak to three games.
Brooklyn tallied the game's first run in the top of the first against Ironbirds starting pitcher Keegan Akin. Sergakis lined a one-out single to center and then stole second. With two outs, 1B Pete Alonso brought Sergakis home with a double to left - his second extra base hit of the series.
Manoah gave the run back in the bottom of the first, but an impressive relay from the Brooklyn defense kept Aberdeen from seizing the lead. With two outs and two runners aboard, Ironbirds DH Jaylen Ferguson slammed a double off the left field wall that scored SS Chris Clare. Trail runner Alejandro Juvier also attempted to score on the play but was tagged out at the plate by C Dan Rizzie after a terrific relay throw from SS Colby Woodmansee.
After the first, Manoah (2-1) settled into a groove and kept the Ironbirds off the board. The right hander scattered four hits and allowed only one run over six innings.
Eventually the Cyclones broke through against reliever Parker Bridwell (1-1). After retiring the first eight batters he faced, Bridwell hit DH Darryl Knight with two outs in fifth. The next batter RF Gene Cone blooped a single into shallow center, sending Knight to third. Sergakis followed with his second home run in three days to put Brooklyn in front 4-1.
The Cyclones tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth inning against Aberdeen LHP Yi-Hsiang Lin. Sergakis contributed again, starting the inning with a single to right. After an Alonso single, CF Jacob Zanon blasted a double into the left field corner sending Sergakis home with his third run of the night. The next hitter, 3B Blake Tiberi, lifted a two-strike sacrifice fly to center to plate Alonso and extend Brooklyn's lead to 6-1.
Jacobson pitched three scoreless innings and struck out six to finish the game and earn his second save of the season.
Tomorrow the Cyclones will aim reach .500 and record their first sweep of the season against the Ironbirds. RHP Gabriel Llanes will make his sixth start of the year for Brooklyn. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Ripken Stadium.
