Auburn Doubledays News Release

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Vermont Lake Monsters, 8-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Falcon Park. The win gives the Doubledays two victories in the three-game series.

The Doubledays (14-12) scored early and often, beginning in the bottom of the first inning. Jack Sundberg led off with a walk. Daniel Johnson then singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. Kelvin Gutierrez followed with a single to left field to score Sundberg and move Johnson to second base as Auburn took a 1-0 lead. Nick Banks then singled to right field, scoring Johnson and moving Gutierrez to third base to extend the Doubledays' lead to two, 2-0. Gutierrez scored on an Oliver Ortiz fielder's choice ground out to put Auburn up 3-0.

Auburn scored again in the third inning. With one out, Gutierrez doubled to left field. Banks lined out, but Ortiz singled to right field to score Gutierrez and give the Doubledays a 4-0 advantage.

Vermont (13-13) got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Brett Sunde led off with a single. Miguel Guzman followed with a double that scored Sunde to cut Auburn's lead to three, 4-1. On the play, Guzman was thrown out at third base, trying to stretch the double into a triple. After a Jesus Lopez strike out, James Terrell reached on a throwing error by Gutierrez at third base. With Eli White batting, Terrell stole second base. White then singled to center field, and Terrell scored to cut the Vermont deficit to two, 4-2.

The Lake Monsters cut further into the Doubledays' lead in the sixth inning. Terrell walked to lead off the inning. After White popped out, Nate Mondou doubled to right field to put runners on second and third with one out. Luke Persico then grounded out to second base, but Terrell scored to cut Auburn's lead to one, 4-3.

The Doubledays responded in the seventh inning. Luis Vilorio walked to begin the inning. Dalton Dulin then singled, and both Vilorio and Dulin advanced to third base and second base on the play because of a throwing error on shortstop Eric Marinez. Sundberg flew out for the first out of the inning, but with Johnson batting, a passed ball allowed Vilorio to score from third and Dulin to move to third as Auburn took a 5-3 lead. Johnson then grounded a ball to second base. Mondou, the second baseman, threw the ball home to try and get Dulin out, but the throw was late, and the Doubledays' lead was three, 6-3. Gutierrez followed with a double to left field. Johnson tried to score, but was thrown out at home plate for the second out of the inning. Banks then doubled to right field to score Gutierrez and put the Doubledays up, 7-3.

Vermont scored again in the top of the eighth inning. White doubled to start the inning. With Mondou batting, White advanced to third base because of a balk. Mondou then singled to score White and cut Auburn's lead back to three, 7-4.

Auburn answered in the bottom of the eighth inning. Clayton Brandt led off with a double. Brandt tagged up and advanced to third base on an Andres Martinez fly out to right field. Luis Vilorio then singled to left field, scoring Brandt and giving the Doubledays an 8-4 lead.

Auburn now travels to Morgantown, West Virginia to begin a three-game series against the Black Bears on Thursday. Washington Nationals first round draft pick Dane Dunning will make his debut for the Doubledays on the mound. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
