Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
AUBURN, NY --- Auburn scored three runs in both the first and seventh innings to lead the Doubledays to an 8-4 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Wednesday afternoon at Falcon Park,
The Doubledays started the bottom of the first with a leadoff walk followed by three straight singles off Vermont starter Heath Bowers for a quick 2-0 lead. An RBI forceout gave Auburn its third run, but Bowers (2-3) did settle down to allow just one more run on three hits over six innings. The four runs allowed marked the first time in 21 Lake Monsters appearances that Bowers has allowed more than two earned runs in an outing.
Vermont battled back to cut a four-run deficit to 4-3 with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. Miguel Guzman had an RBI double and Eli White an RBI single in the fifth, but the Lake Monsters also left the bases loaded. In the fifth, Nate Mondou doubled with one out to advance James Terrell to third base before Terrell scored on a Luke Persico RBI groundout.
Auburn responded with three runs in the seventh off reliever Branden Kelliher, including a Nick Banks RBI double. The teams exchanged runs in the eighth on a Mondou RBI single after a White double and a Luis Vilorio RBI single after a Clayton Brandt double for the Doubledays. Vermont outhit Auburn 15-11 in the game, but the Lake Monsters went just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position (Doubledays 5-for-14) and left a season-high 14 runners on base.
Mondou went 3-for-4 with a walk to go along with his RBI double and is now 13-for-24 (.542) with eight RBI over his last seven games. Guzman was 3-for-4 with two doubles and Brett Sunde was 3-for-5 with a run scored for Vermont (13-13), which has lost consecutive games for the first time since June 26-27.
Kelvin Gutierrez was 3-for-4 with three runs, two doubles and an RBI for Auburn (14-12), while Banks was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Nick Conner (1-1) allowed two runs over two innings of relief for the win, while Steven Fuentes one run over the final three innings to earn his third save. The eight runs scored by Auburn were the most that Vermont has allowed since nine at Lowell on June 18th, while the 11 hits marked just second time in last 16 games a Lake Monsters opponent had 10 or more hits in a game.
Vermont returns home to historic Centennial Field on Thursday at 7:05 pm for Military Appreciation Night and Kids Eat Free as the Lake Monsters begin a three-game homestand against the Williamsport Crosscutters.
