Bakersfield Blaze News Release

For the second consecutive night, the Bakersfield Blaze put together a monster 6th inning, and posted double digit runs en route to a win over the visiting Inland Empire 66ers.

Despite all the offense, the biggest story tonight was the dominant second start for Stalin Gerson (W, 1-1), the newest Blaze starter. Gerson, a strike-thrower on paper, showed that sometimes papers are correct. The slender righthander went 7.0 strong innings, allowing just two runs -- both coming in the 2nd inning -- on five hits, striking out five without a walk.

On the other side, Inland starter Aaron Meade (L, 1-1) was strong for five innings, but his conversion from reliever to starter showed itself in the 6th. With the Sixers leading 2-1, Meade ran out of gas.

The first three Blaze batters all singled to tie the game at 2 before the true fireworks. Dominic D'Anna smashed a three-run shot to deepest rightcenter to put the Blaze up, 5-2, and Devin Lohman followed with a solo blast to left, the fourth time this year the Blaze has gone back-to-back, and the team led, 6-2.

The fun was not over yet. The Sixers went to the pen for help, but Lay Batista was wild, issuing two walks, and allowing the Blaze to come up with two more runs on a Travis Mattair two-run single, putting Bakersfield up, 8-2, and from there, the game was largely decided.

The Sixers got a cheap one in the 8th, an unearned run off reliever Chris Joyce, and the Blaze countered with a pair in the bottom half to bring the score to 10-3, and Randal Grichuk homered in the 9th to bring the score to its final mark of 10-4.

The ten runs marked the 12th time this season the Blaze have cleared double digits, and the team is 11-1 in those games, losing only the opener of this homestand. In addition, the Blaze finish the seven game homestand 4-3, winning the final three games over the 66ers.

The team now heads on the road for a four-game series in Modesto, running Friday through Monday, before coming home for the season's final seven games here in Bakersfield.

Make sure to tune in to all four games in Modesto at BakersfieldBlaze.com, and both Friday and Saturday contests will be broadcast locally on the Blaze radio partner, SmartTalk AM-1230. Both games will begin with a pregame show at 6:55pm; first pitch is set for 7:05pm, with Dan Besbris bringing the call.
