Sparks acquire Johnson and Page in exchange for Teasley

EL SEGUNDO, CA- The Los Angeles Sparks have acquired guard Temeka Johnson and forward Murriel Page from the Washington Mystics in exchange for Nikki Teasley, it was announced today. In addition, the Sparks and Mystics will exchange first round 2006 WNBA Draft picks with Los Angeles now moving up to fifth and Washington choosing eighth.

Johnson, the 2005 WNBA Rookie of the Year, averaged 9.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists in her first season with the Washington Mystics. The sixth overall pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft, Johnson started all 34 games and ranked second in assists per game and first in total assists. Among rookies, Johnson ranked first in scoring, assists, steals and minutes played (973). The 5-3 guard had an impressive collegiate career at Louisiana State University where she was the Southeastern Conference leader in total assists, a three-time Associated Press All-American and was named to the All-SEC first team in 2004 and 2005. Johnson is currently a member of Gdynia (Poland).

Johnson said, "I'm thankful and happy for the opportunity to play in Los Angeles. The level of athleticism couldn't be better to play with."

Page averaged 6.9 points and 5.2 rebounds over her eight years with the Washington Mystics. A 6-2 forward out of Florida, Page was drafted third in the 1998 WNBA Draft. Page is currently playing for Hondarribia (Spain) where she is averaging a double-double with 14.7 points and 11.5 rebounds.

"I'm very excited about coming to play in Los Angeles," Page said. "The Sparks are one of the top teams in the WNBA and I think we have a great chance of winning a championship. I'm looking forward to playing with Chamique, Mwadi and Lisa who are some of the best players in the world."

The Los Angeles Sparks will tip off the 10th anniversary season on Sunday, May 21st in Seattle when they take on the Storm. The Sparks will have their home opener on Wednesday, June 7th at 6pm when they take on the Detroit Shock at STAPLES Center.
