Houston Comets News Release
HOUSTON - Houston Comets Head Coach & GM Van Chancellor announced today that the team has signed veteran guard Tamecka Dixon to a free agent contract. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"I'm excited about joining the Comets because I think it's a great opportunity for me," said Dixon. "I think I can bring some intangibles to the team, but I think the biggest thing I can bring is my veteran leadership. Everyone knows of the great tradition in Houston, and I'm looking forward to bringing another championship here."
Dixon (5-9, Kansas '97) averaged 5.3 points and 2.6 assists in 30 games last season with the Los Angeles Sparks. She ranked eighth in the WNBA in assists per turnover (1.9) and tenth in assists per 40 minutes (5.1) in 2005.
A three-time All-Star, Dixon holds career averages of 10.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists in her nine seasons in the WNBA. She is among the top twenty leaders in assists (769), and the top ten in both games (263) and minutes played (7,315) in WNBA history. Dixon was selected by Los Angeles in the second round (14th overall) of the 1997 WNBA Draft.
This season will mark the 10th Anniversary for the Comets and the WNBA, making it the longest-running professional women's league in history. The 2006 season will tip off at Toyota Center on May 21st when the Comets host the San Antonio Silver Stars.
