
Mystics acquire Nikki Teasley

Washington, D.C. - The Washington Mystics have acquired guard Nikki Teasley from the Los Angeles Sparks and the No. 8 pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft in exchange for forward Murriel Page, guard Temeka Johnson and the fifth pick in the draft, Mystics general manager Linda Hargrove announced today. Per company policy, terms of the contract will not be released.
"Nikki brings championship experience to the Mystics," said Hargrove "She is an athletic six foot point guard who has proven herself on every level and she's a local product."
A native of Washington D.C., Teasley helped lead the Sparks to two WNBA Championships. She has started every game (119) of her four year career and has averaged 9.0 points, 5.3 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game. In 2002, Teasley hit the game winning shot that helped seal the Sparks first championship. In 2003, she was named to the All-Star team where she earned MVP honors. Following the 2004 season, Teasley was named to the All-WNBA Second team.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Teasley was drafted in the first round (fifth overall) by the Portland Fire and was immediately dealt to the Sparks. She earned numerous collegiate honors including All-ACC first team and AP All-America honorable mention.
A veteran who played eight years with the team, Murriel Page was the first player selected by the Washing ton Mystics in 1998. She was drafted in the first round (third overall). Over her career, Page has averaged 6.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.
Temeka Johnson was drafted in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2005 WNBA Draft. She was named Rookie of the Year following a campaign where she averaged points and 5.2 assists per game.
"Murriel has been the heart and soul of our team since the beginning," said Hargove. "She will be missed by everyone who has been involved with our franchise. She is the ultimate professional, who wants to be in a situation where she can contribute." Hargrove added, "Temeka Johnson was a great pick for us last year. She has a tremendous future in the league."
