SUGAR LAND, TX - The Sugar Land Space Cowboys, in conjunction with Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home and the Jones family, are hosting Deacon's Celebration Under the Lights at Constellation Field on Monday, May 15 in remembrance of Grover "Deacon" Jones.

A public viewing will run from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at home plate, with the Celebration Under the Lights beginning at 7:05 pm. All attendees are encouraged to dress in casual ballpark attire. Any flower donations are requested to be purchases through House of Blooms - Sugar Land.

The Celebration Under the Lights will be livestreamed on the Space Cowboys YouTube Channel for those who cannot attend. Media that plan on attending the Celebration Under the Lights are asked to RSVP to Space Cowboys Media Relations Manager Garrett Greene at ggreene@astros.com.

The first ever Midwest League MVP as a minor league player, Deacon appeared in 40 Major League games with the Chicago White Sox between 1962 and 1966. He joined the Houston Astros as the teams' hitting coach from 1976 to 1982 then worked as the hitting coach for the San Diego Padres from 1984 to 1987 before spending 20 years in a role as an advanced scout for the White Sox.

Once his career as an advanced scout ended, Jones shifted his focus to securing a baseball franchise in Sugar Land, working with former City of Sugar Land Mayor Jimmy Thompson to bring a team to Fort Bend County. Thanks to the work of Jones, the Sugar Land Skeeters debuted in the independent Atlantic League in 2012, and in their very first season set Atlantic League records for average and overall attendance. For the impact he had on the Sugar Land franchise, Jones had his #4 retired by Sugar Land, the first jersey retired by the franchise, on August 4, 2019.
