Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
WICHITA, KS - The Amarillo Sox pitchers had plenty of trouble with the bats of the Wichita Wingnuts on Monday night as the Sox fell in the series opener 10-5 at Community America Ballpark.
Sox starter Derek Christensen (2-1) got the loss, allowing six runs off six hits in three innings of work. Wingnuts starter Ryan Hinson (4-1) got the win, despite allowing all five Amarillo runs.
Wichita wasted no time to start scoring as Jake Kahaulelio hit a solo homerun. Amarillo responded in the second inning as Alberto Espinosa doubled, Adam Buschini walked while Mitch Abeita grounded out to move both runners over. Harrison Kain followed with a double to score both runners for a 2-1 Sox lead.
The Wingnuts responded with a Taylor Freeman RBI double in the second to tie the game, while John Rodriguez hit a three-run homer in the third to re-take the lead. Kahaulelio added another run with an RBI in the fourth for a 6-2 advantage.
Amarillo got back into the game in the fifth as Jason White led off with a hit-by-pitch while Jake Opitz and Tim Alberts singled to load the bases. Van Pope singled to score both White and Opitz, while Buschini singled to score Alberts for a 6-5 score.
Wichita extended their existing lead with a four-run sixth on five hits and an error for a 10-5 advantage.
The Sox would not score again to fall by that score.
With the loss, the Sox fall to 18-12 while the Wingnuts improve to 22-8. Tuesday, Amarillo will take on Wichita for the second game of the three-game set at 7:05pm. The game can be heard by visiting www.wichitawingnuts.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
