South Bay Lakers News Release
ONTARIO, CA - The South Bay Lakers grabbed their first win of the 2019-20 campaign as they beat the Agua Caliente Clippers, 110-93, on Wednesday night. The Lakers (1-1) were led by Kostas Antetokounmpo, as he scored a career-high 23 points. Johnathan Motley paced the Clippers (2-1) with a team-best 17 points.
It was a low-scoring affair in the first quarter, but the Lakers took a two-point lead, 18-16, into the second frame. Talen Horton-Tucker was the go-to guy to start, scoring eight points in the opening 12 minutes. South Bay outscored the Clippers by 22 in the second quarter to take a 24-point lead, 59-35 into the break. Antetokounmpo led South Bay with 16 first-half points.
South By extended their lead after three, 90-64, behind nine third-quarter points from David Stockton in his South Bay debut. Agua Caliente outscored the Lakers in the final quarter, but South Bay was able to hold off their opponent and grab the road victory.
Motley's 17 points led the Clippers, while Mfiondu Kabengele scored 13 points on assignment. James Palmer Jr. pitched in 14 points and Donte Grantham also scored in double figures with 13 points off the bench.
Antetokounmpo's career high led the way for South Bay and Devontae Cacok recorded his second consecutive double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, one steal and two blocks. Horton-Tucker did some of everything, finishing with 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Stockton tallied 18 points with six assists, while Gary Payton II put up 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists, five steals and one block.
South Bay will return to the court tomorrow night when they host the Sioux Falls Skyforce at 7:00pm from the UCLA Health Training Center.
