Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE --The Nashville Sounds fell to the Omaha Royals, 8-5, on Wednesday afternoon before 6,481 fans at Greer Stadium in the third game of a four-game series.

The Sounds held a 5-3 advantage going into the top of the eighth inning, but were unable to hold the lead, giving up five runs in the frame. Scoring in the inning started when Omaha's Alexis Gomez belted a two-run homer to right field off newly-acquired Sounds reliever Jim Mann to score Dave Ullery ahead of him and knot the game at 5-5.

Moments later, Jed Hansen singled to center to score David DeJesus and give the visitors a 6-5 lead. Rick Short padded the Royals lead shortly thereafter when he hit a two-run single to chase Mann and give Omaha a commanding 8-5 lead.

In his first action for the Sounds this season after signing as a free agent earlier in the day, Mann (0-1) was charged with the loss in the contest after giving up five runs on six hits in just one-third of an inning of work.

The Sounds opened the day's scoring when they got on the board in the first inning without even managing a hit. Tony Alvarez, who had been walked by Omaha starter Jamey Wright to get on base, stole second, then scored the game's first run when he was trying to steal third. Omaha catcher Alberto Castillo hurled an errant throw that bounced off Royal third baseman Rick Short's chest and bounded away just enough to give Alvarez a chance to score at home to make the score 1-0.

The Royals responded quickly in the top of the second inning against Sounds starter Dave Williams. With the bases loaded, ex-Sound Adrian Brown nailed a hard-hit double down the left field line that barely stayed fair but was enough to clear the bases and give Royals their first lead of the game,3-1.

An inning later, the Sounds reacquired the lead when J. J. Davis ripped a two-out, bases-loaded double down the left field line to unload the bases and give the Sounds a 4-3 lead. Davis, who went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI on the afternoon, has driven nine of his 12 hits on his rehab stint for extra bases.

In the bottom of the fourth, Nashville third baseman Luis Figueroa belted a home run to left field off Wright that just barely stayed inside the foul pole to give the Sounds a 5-3 lead. The home run was Figueroa's third of the year.

The score remained the same until Omaha's eighth-inning rally put them ahead to stay.

Royals reliever Justin Huisman (2-2) picked up the victory after tossing two scoreless innings. D.J. Carrasco, a former Pirates farmhand, fanned three over two scoreless frames to pick up his first save.

The teams wrap up the four-game set with a 7 p.m. meeting on Thursday evening. Left-hander Frank Brooks (3-2, 3.70) takes the hill for Nashville. He will face Omaha southpaw Matt White (0-0, 0.00).
