Trappers defeat Daigle, Sidewinders

Casey Daigle suffered his third loss in three starts with Tucson as Edmonton defeated the Sidewinders 4-1 Wednesday afternoon at TELUS Field. The Trappers have won two of the three games in the series while the Sidewinders have dropped six of the last eight games.

The Trappers wasted little time putting two runs on the board against Daigle in the bottom of the first. Ron Calloway singled in Brandon Watson with the first run. Calloway came home to score on a single from Valentino Pascucci.

Edmonton increased the lead to 3-0 in the fourth when they started the frame with three straight hits. John Wilson's single scored Brian Harris with the run.

Tucson finally got to Edmonton starter Scott Downs in the seventh. Coming off a seven inning no-hitter Downs extended his conseuctive scoreless innings streak to 20 putting up zeros in the Tucson run column through six innings. Craig Ansman started the seventh with a solo home run over the 420 sign in center field.

The Trappers responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead back to three runs at 4-1.

The Sidewinders produced singles from Ansman and Kyle Nichols in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate. However Jason Childers came out of the Edmonton bullpen and retired Brian Barden and Jerry Gil to end the game.

Ansman led Tucson with three hits. Quinton McCracken went 2-4 with two outstanding defensive plays in right field in his first start with the Sidewinders.

Tucson dropped to 36-30 with the loss. The Sidewinders and the Trappers will finish off the four-game series Thursday afternoon at 11:05 a.m. (Tucson time). Edgar Gonzalez (2-5 5.23) will start for Tucson against the Trappers Josh Karp (3-5 4.87). The game will be TAPE DELAYED AT 7:00 p.m. on Cool 1450 AM.
