June 16, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release

Joel Hanrahan held the Beavers to a run on three hits through six innings and Antonio Perez and Jose Flores both tallied two RBIs as the Las Vegas 51s beat the Portland Beavers 5-1 Wednesday night at Cashman Field.

Hanrahan (3-2) held the Beavers (31-36) without a hit through the first four-plus innings until Bobby Scales logged a base hit to left field with two outs in the fifth. Hanrahan issued three walks and had three strikeouts for his third win.

Hanrahan contributed with the bat by hitting two extra-base hits, a double and triple.

Eric Knott, Rodney Myers and Giovanni Carrara each worked an inning in relief of Hanrahan to close out the three-hit evening.

Antonio Perez helped the 51s (29-38) get on the board early with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first.

In the fourth, Chin-Feng Chen doubled to right just inside first base and Jose Flores grounded to third to drive in the run for a 2-0 lead.

Perez drove in his second run with a sacrifice fly to deep center after Hanrahan tripled in the bottom of the fifth.

The 51s, who had 11 hits, plated single runs in the sixth and seventh. Flores hit an infield single for his second RBI and Koyie Hill doubled to drive in Jason Repko.

Jose Nieves tripled to lead off the seventh and later scored on an RBI single by Yamid Haad. Until the inning, Portland had just one hit through six innings.

The three hits was the Beavers' lowest output since April 23 against Tucson, when they tallied two hits in a 1-0 victory.

Donovan Osborne (1-1), starting in place of scheduled starter Brian Sweeney, worked 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits to receive the loss in his second appearance with the Beavers.

The series concludes Thursday night at 7:10 p.m.

NOTES: The San Diego Padres recalled Sweeney after Antonio Osuna was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday. Additionally, outfielder Xavier Nady was optioned back to Portland as Ryan Klesko was activated from the DL. Nady is expected to join the Beavers for their upcoming eight-game homestand that begins Friday night at PGE Park ... for the first time this season with the Beavers, Freddy Guzman was thrown out stealing. Guzman is now 15-for-16 in stolen base attempts for Portland ... Nieves extended his hitting streak to a season-high 12 games ... it was Osborne's first start since May 15 against Seattle, his last appearance with the New York Yankees prior to his release.
