Fresno Grizzlies News Release

FRESNO - The Grizzlies will host the 2nd annual Organ Donor Awareness Day along with The California Transplant Donor Network and the Community Tissue Services to help raise awareness on Thursday, June 24th. That day has been designated National Organ & Tissue Donor Awareness Day with Baseball.

To commemorate this day the Grizzlies have planned a day full of exciting promotions:

• Giants' baseball cards commemorating organ donation will be handed out to fans entering the ballpark.

• The Giants Entrees Cookbooks will be on sale around the ballpark with all proceeds benefiting the California Transplant Donor Network and the Step to the Plate Foundation in memory of Lori Gardner. The Step to the Plate Foundation was started in 2000 by Mark and Lori Gardner along with Bobby Jones to help families of organ transplant recipients. Since then they have donated over $200,000 to help patients who could not have otherwise afforded treatment.

• All fans that show proof of a signed organ donor card will also be eligible to win Grizzlies' prizes.

• Wild Thing will become an organ and tissue donor by signing a commitment to share life in a special segment on the field between innings.

• Community Tissue Services will be distributing green "Recycle Yourself" fans and frisbees to symbolize the meaning of life as members of the California Transplant Network Group will be on hand to answer questions.

More than 83,000 Americans are waiting for organ transplants. Every 13 minutes someone will go on the waiting list for an organ transplant.

By choosing to be an organ donor you can save seven lives - the heart, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, liver and tissues can all be donated to save lives. Tissues include eyes, skin, bone, heart valves, veins and tendons. Having a pink dot on your driver's license does not mean that you are an organ donor, you must sign and carry the donor card that comes with your license or the pledge card distributed by the Grizzlies.
