Nashville Sounds News Release

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Nashville Sounds plated four runs late in the game to overcome an early deficit and held off a ninth-inning Oklahoma rally to defeat the division-rival RedHawks, 6-5, on Thursday evening in the finale of a four-game series at SBC Bricktown Ballpark.

The victory, the Sounds' 16th in their last 21 games and sixth in their last seven contests against Oklahoma, gave Nashville (61-43) a victory in their second consecutive road series and extended the club's lead over New Orleans in the PCL East Division to a season-best 6 ½ games. The Zephyrs dropped their series finale in Albuquerque late Thursday evening.

Ryan Vogelsong (10-6) allowed three runs on five hits and fanned five over six innings to pick up the victory, giving the Sounds a pair of 10-game winners for the first time since the club became a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate in 1998. Nashville right-hander Nelson Figueroa currently leads the Pacific Coast League with 11 victories.

Mark Corey allowed a pair of runs in the ninth but held on to record the final out to earn his franchise-record 28th save, breaking a tie with Geoff Combe (1979) for the Sounds' single-season mark. The save also established a new career-best for the right-hander, who leads the league and ranks second in the minors in saves this season.

John Barnes finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and Rob Mackowiak went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a season-best four games to pace the Nashville offense in the victory.

Outfielders Ryan Thompson (two) and Tony Alvarez (one) recorded stolen bases in the contest to each reach 10 thefts on the season and give Nashville six different players with at least 10 swipes, the second-highest such total in franchise history.

Left-hander Frank Brooks, acquired by the Pirates from Philadelphia earlier this week in a deal for All-Star closer Mike Williams, made his Sounds debut with a scoreless seventh inning that included a strikeout.

The Sounds begin the final leg of their 12-game road trip on Friday evening in Colorado Springs, where they'll take on the Sky Sox in an 8:05 p.m. CDT opener of a four-game series. Nashville swept a four-game series from the Rockies' top affiliate in late June at Greer Stadium in the teams' first meeting this season.

PCL wins leader Nelson Figueroa (11-5, 3.20) will start for Nashville and face Colorado Springs southpaw Cory Vance (8-8, 4.73).
