July 24, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Edmonton Trappers News Release
Today's Pacific Coast League game between the Edmonton Trappers and the Las Vegas 51s, originally scheduled to begin at 7:05 PM, has been cancelled due to wet grounds. The game will not be rescheduled as the two clubs do not meet again in 2003. Edmonton begins a six-game series against the Tucson Sidewinders on Friday night at TELUS Field. The Trappers are began play with a four-game lead over the second-place Salt Lake Stingers in the North Division of the Pacific Coast League.
The Trappers have been one of the hottest teams in the Pacific Coast League over the last six weeks. The club has won nine of its last 13 games and has been victorious in 24 of the last 37 contests. Edmonton moved into possession of first place on July 1 and has held that spot ever since. The club will play 10 of its next 14 games at TELUS Field, where they own an impressive 30-21 record. Edmonton currently leads the Pacific Coast League with a .299 batting average, eight points higher than the Salt Lake Stingers, who own the second highest average in the circuit. The club has banged out 1032 hits in 102 games, putting them on pace to challenge the club record of 1459 hits, set in 1983.
Outfielder Terrmel Sledge, the club's lone representative at last week's All-Star Game in Memphis, is among the league leaders in six different offensive categories. He began play on Thursday night with the fourth highest batting average in the league (.328) and was fourth in hits. In addition Sledge was fourth in triples (7), third on on-base percentage (.415), fourth in slugging percentage (.531) and fourth in runs scored (68). He is currently on an eight-game hitting streak, during which he is batting .457 (16-for-35). Sledge had a 20-game hitting streak, which tied for the sixth longest in club history, earlier this season.
Outfielder Valentino Pascucci is also having a terrific season. The big slugger got off to a slow start, but is hitting .342 (67-for-196) with 11 home runs and 50 RBI in his last 60 games and now leads the PCL in on-base percentage (.434). He is also fourth in the league with 68 RBI. In July alone Pascucci has seven home runs and 23 RBI in only 22 games. Second baseman Luis Figueroa has been stellar defensively for the club and is currently tied for sixth in the league with a .320 batting average.
Edmonton and Tucson will play a single game on Friday night before tangling in back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. The six-game series will conclude on Monday afternoon with a 12:05 PM start. The Trappers and Sidewinders have split the 10 games that they have played this season.
