Gosling Lifts Tucson to Win in His Hometown

Mike Gosling returned to Salt Lake Thursday night and pitched Tucson to a 5-1 win over Salt Lake in front of a crowd of 16,321 at Franklin Covey Field on Pioneer Day. Gosling, who went to East High School in Salt Lake pitched a season high seven innings allowing three hits and one run while retiring the last 11 Stingers he faced to win his ninth game of the season.

Gosling allowed a run to the Stingers without a hit in the bottom of the first. Two walks, a wild pitch and a ground out by Robb Quinlan put Salt Lake in front 1-0

Tucson strung together three straight singles to tie the game in the second. Luis Terrero's base hit plated Billy Martin.

The Sidewinders took the lead for good in the third when Danny Ramirez singled and scored from first on a Chad Tracy double.

Martin and Doug Devore each produced run scoring hits in a two-run sixth inning. Brad Cresse produced Tucson's fifth run with a two-out single in the eighth.

Billy Martin extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 3-4 night, two runs scored and one RBI. Devore also produced three hits, one run and one RBI.

Sidewinders improved to 51-53. Tucson will continue its fourteen-game road trip Friday night with the first of a six-game, four-day series in Edmonton. Edgar Gonzalez (7-2 3.99) will start for the Sidewinders against the Trappers Ron Chiavacci (4-1 6.06).
