Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE -- The Nashville Sounds continued to use the longball to their advantage, plating all their runs on roundtrippers in a 4-2 victory over the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds on Thursday evening in front of 7,305 fans at Greer Stadium.
The victory gave Nashville (13-13) a three-games-to-one series victory and jumped the Sounds past the Redbirds into second place in the PCL Eastern Division, two games back of Oklahoma.
Nashville jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Luke Allen belted Memphis starter Dan Haren's second pitch of the inning over the wall in center for his sixth home run of the season and a 1-0 Sounds lead. Luis Figueroa followed with a double to right-center and Jason Bay walked on four pitches to set the table for Nashville's second blast of the inning, a three-run Ruben Mateo shot high off the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left-center. The roundtripper was Mateo's team-leading 10th of the season.
Memphis halved the Sounds' lead to 4-2 with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Luis Ortiz continued his strong series by leading off the seventh with his first longball of the season, a solo shot to left-center. In the eighth, rehabbing outfielder Roger Cedeno drew a one-out walk from Sounds reliever Frank Brooks, moved to second on a Yadier Molina single, advanced to third on a John Gall single, and scored on a John Mabry groundout.
Bay went 0-for-2 with a walk and two strikeouts before being removed in the top of the seventh. He batted .400 (4-for-10) with three RBI in the four-game series for the Sounds.
Nashville starter Dave Williams (1-1) picked up his first victory after allowing only one run on six hits in a season-high seven innings, fanning five batters along the way. Mark Corey came on to record the final four outs of the contest to record his league-leading eighth save. Haren (4-2) fanned 10 batters in his seven frames, but took the loss after allowing all four Nashville runs.
The Sounds head to Oklahoma City on Friday to begin a four-game road series with the division-leading RedHawks with a 7:05 p.m. opener. Right-hander John VanBenschoten (0-4, 8.74) takes the hill for the Sounds in search of his first career Triple-A victory. He'll be opposed by Oklahoma right-hander John Wasdin (1-0, 2.57), who makes his first start against Nashville since throwing a perfect game for the Sounds last April at Greer Stadium.
