Expos acquire left-hander Joe Horgan in trade with St. Louis

EDMONTON, AB - The Montreal Expos announced today that left-handed pitcher Joe Horgan has been acquired in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for left-hander Benji Dequin. Dequin was assigned to Single-A Brevard County to begin the season, but was placed on the disabled list on Opening Day and has not pitched this season. Horgan should be available to play on Friday in Portland against the Beavers. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 24 players; 12 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders and three outfielders, plus one player (infielder Henry Mateo) on the disabled list.

Horgan, 26, started the season with the Memphis Redbirds, Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The native of Sacramento, California was 0-1, 6.52 (9.2 IP - 7 ER) in 10 games with Memphis, before the trade. He began his minor league career in the Cleveland Indians farm system after being selected in the 11th round of the 1996 draft. Horgan signed as a free agent with San Francisco in 1999 and spent five seasons in the Giants system before signing with the Cardinals this past off-season. He pitched in 85 games with the Fresno Grizzlies at the Triple-A level from 2000-2003, combining to go 9-9, 5.46 (140.0 IP - 85 ER) with three saves. Horgan was 40-43 with a 4.79 ERA (712.2 IP - 379 ER) with 11 saves in 243 minor league appearances (82 starts) entering the 2004 season.

The next Trapper home game will be on Thursday, May 11 when the club will take on the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. The game will begin at 7:05 PM.
