
Sound Tigers Open 2002-03 Season, Raise 2001-02 Banners

The Sound Tigers opened the 2002-03 regular season with a 5-4 overtime loss on the road to the Binghamton Senators Friday and a 4-2 home loss to the Norfolk Admirals Saturday. Prior to Saturday's game, they raised their 2001-02 East Division, Regular Season and Eastern Conference Playoff Championship banners to the Arena at Harbor Yard rafters.
FRI OCT 11th at BNG, 5-4 OTL: The first-year Senators marked the return of the AHL to Binghamton by erasing 2-0 and 3-2 deficits en route to a 5-4 overtime win. JASON SPEZZA had one goal and two assists for Binghamton while ERIC MANLOW, two goals, and JEFF HAMILTON, two assists, shined in their Sound Tigers debuts. ALAN LETANG and JUSTIN MAPLETOFT also scored goals for the Sound Tigers who were 0 for 4 on the power play. Binghamton was 2 for 6 on the advantage and outshot the Sound Tigers 34-18 including 8-0 in the third period.
SAT OCT 12th vs. NOR, 4-2 L: Norfolk Goaltender MICHAEL LEIGHTON stopped 36 of 38 shots leading the Admirals to their second road win in as many nights. BRETT McLEAN also had a goal and an assist for Norfolk. KONSTANTIN KALMIKOV and JASON HAMILTON scored one goal apiece while DANIEL TETRAULT, ERIC MANLOW and JUSTIN MAPLETOFT added an assist each for the Sound Tigers. Hamilton, Manlow and Mapletoft recorded points for the second game in a row while Kalmikov and Tetrault notched their first points with the team. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 10 on the power play, 7 for 7 on the penalty kill and outshot Norfolk 38-27.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK â C JEFF HAMILTON
The former Yale star notched a pair of assists in Friday's overtime loss in Binghamton then scored a power-play goal to tie the game at 2-2 early in the third period Saturday at home versus Norfolk. He has one goal, two assists, three points and is even in two games this season. Hamilton leads the Sound Tigers with two assists and is tied with ERIC MANLOW for the team lead with three points in two games this season.
THIS WEEK â Sound Tigers To Play Three Games in Four Nights
The Sound Tigers will host the St. John's Maple Leafs Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. and the Hartford Wolf Pack Friday at 7:35 p.m. They will visit the Springfield Falcons Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
WED OCT 16th vs. SJS, 7:05 p.m.: This will be the first of four meetings between the teams in a two-week span that will mark the entire season series. The Sound Tigers will visit St. John's Friday and Saturday October 25th and 26th while the Maple Leafs will return to Bridgeport on Wednesday, October 30th. The Sound Tigers swept St. John's four games to none in last season's Eastern Conference semifinals after posting a 1-1-2 record in last year's regular-season series. The Maple Leafs enter this week in second place in the Canadian Division with two points and a 1-1-0-0 record. They lost 5-3 on the road to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins last Thursday and beat the Albany River Rats 7-3 on the road last Saturday. Wednesday's game will be the fourth of a four-game, season-opening road trip for St. John's who will visit Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Monday night.
FRI OCT 18th vs. HFD, 7:35 p.m.: This will be the first of ten meetings between the teams this season. The Sound Tigers were 6-4 versus Hartford last regular season. The Wolf Pack enter this week tied for first place in the overall AHL standings with four points and a 2-0-0-0 record. They won 4-2 on the road versus Springfield last Friday and 5-3 at Binghamton last Saturday. Friday's game will be third of three straight on the road and the third of a stretch in which Hartford will play four of five games away from home. The Wolf Pack will host the Manchester Monarchs Saturday.
SAT OCT 19th at SPR, 7:35 p.m.: This will be the first of eight meetings between the teams this season. The Sound Tigers were 4-3-1 versus Springfield last regular season. The Falcons enter this week in fifth place in the East Division with an 0-2-0-0 record. They lost two home games, 4-2 to Hartford Friday and 6-2 to the Portland Pirates Saturday, last week. Springfield will visit the Providence Bruins Friday, as well as host the Sound Tigers Saturday and Providence Sunday afternoon.
SOUND TIGERS TEAM LEADERS
ERIC MANLOW has two goals, JEFF HAMILTON has two assists, Manlow and Hamilton are tied for the team lead with three points, and several players are tied for the team lead with six penalty minutes, a +1 and two games played.
SOUND TIGERS SPECIAL TEAMS
The Sound Tigers enter this week 22nd in the AHL on the power play (1 for 14, 7.1 %) and 11th on the penalty kill (11 for 13, 84.6%). They have neither scored nor allowed a shorthanded goal.

The Sound Tigers are now 0-2 in home openers...the Philadelphia Phantoms beat them 4-1 in their Arena at Harbor Yard debut last season. Friday's loss in Binghamton was the fourth straight overtime game for the Sound Tigers who finished their preseason schedule with two ties and an overtime win.
STREAKS
ERIC MANLOW (2g,1a), JEFF HAMILTON (1g,2a) and JUSTIN MAPLETOFT (1g,1a) are on two-game scoring streaks...last Saturday's game was the first of a three-game homestand, and this Saturday's game will be the first of three straight on the road for the Sound Tigers.

RW JURAJ KOLNIK was recalled by the NHL's New York Islanders and traded to the Florida Panthers Friday. D EVGENY KOROLEV has been reassigned by the Islanders to Yaroslavl in the Russian Elite League. C JUSTIN MAPLETOFT and LW RAFFI TORRES have been recalled by the Islanders. RW TRENT HUNTER and D TOMI PETTINEN have been assigned to the Sound Tigers by the Islanders.

Sound Tigers players and coaches will serve as celebrity bartenders at the Southport Brewing Company next Tuesday, October 22nd at 8 p.m. to raise money for the Fairfield Police Benefit Association Holiday Toy Drive.
