Zigomanis Named Week's Top Player

SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Lowell Lock Monsters center Mike Zigomanis has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 13, 2002. Zigomanis led all AHL scorers with six points during the league's opening weekend.

A second-year pro, Zigomanis began the 2002-03 season with a goal and three assists to lead Lowell to a 7-3 win over Manchester on Friday night. It was the first four-point game of his career. In the rematch on Saturday, Zigomanis scored once and added an assist in the Lock Monsters' 6-3 loss to the Monarchs.

In recognition of his achievement, Zigomanis will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Nashua Panthers Youth Hockey Association's In-House Mites in Zigomanis's name.

A native of North York, Ont., Zigomanis was a second-round choice (46th overall) of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He recorded 18 goals and 30 assists in 79 games with the Lock Monsters as a rookie last season.

Other players nominated for Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Albany center Craig Darby, Binghamton center Jason Spezza, Bridgeport center Jeff Hamilton, Grand Rapids center Mark Mowers, Hartford left wing Rico Fata, Houston left wing Jeremy Stevenson, Manchester center Derek Armstrong, Manitoba center Jeff Farkas, Milwaukee forward Darren Haydar, Norfolk right wing Mike Peluso, Philadelphia goaltender Neil Little, Portland right wing Peter Ferraro, Providence center Matt Herr, Rochester goaltender Ryan Miller, San Antonio center Jeff Toms, St. John's left wing Brad Leeb and Utah defenseman John Erskine.
