Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 3-1 at home to the Philadelphia Phantoms Saturday. The Sound Tigers are now 0-3 in home openers at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard.
Philadelphia's Mark Murphy opened the scoring just 1:35 into the game with his first goal of the season as the Phantoms outworked the Sound Tigers deep in the Bridgeport zone. In fact, Murphy's goal came on the third shot of the sequence with Patrick Sharp and Peter Vandermeer assisting on the play.
Philadelphia doubled its lead to 2-0 with more strong play in the offensive zone as Captain Boyd Kane notched his first marker of the season with 4:31 left in the first period off assists by Peter White and Sharp. However, the Sound Tigers pulled to within 2-1 when Rob Collins, who had a shorthanded goal last night in Hartford, scored his second goal of the season 2:22 later on the power play off assists by Derek Bekar and Brandon Smith. Bekar's helper was his first point as a Sound Tiger.
Philadelphia regained the two-goal lead at 3-1 when White scored his second goal in as many nights exactly 8:00 into the middle frame off assists by Randy Jones and Kirby Law.
The Sound Tigers pulled Goaltender Wade Dubielewicz to turn a late power play into a six-on-four advantage with 1:47 left in the game but were unable to score.
The Sound Tigers finished the game 1 for 4 on the power play and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill. The shots on goal were tied at 27-27. Neil Little made 26 saves to earn the win for Philadelphia while Dubielewicz stopped 24 shots in a losing effort for the Sound Tigers. White was the first star of the game, Collins the second and Sharp the third.
The Sound Tigers will host the Binghamton Senators, in a rematch of last spring's Eastern Conference Semi-Final, in a Columbus Day matinee this Monday, October the 13th at 4:05 p.m. The game will be web cast live at www.soundtigers.com beginning at 3:45 p.m.
