Checkers Drop Two Close Ones

Greenville, SC - Saturday, October 11, 2003) - The Charlotte Checkers were competitive but dropped a pair of one-goal decisions in their two 4 v. 4 scrimmages on "Hockey Day" Saturday at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville. In the opener, the Checkers lost 4-3 to the Greenville Grrrowl and fell in their second scrimmage of the day to the Greensboro Generals 3-2. "We didn't get off to a particularly fast start in either scrimmage", remarked Checkers Head Coach Don MacAdam. "We played well at times but I'm still looking for more consistency. Allan Egeland has a had a strong preseason start and has been our best player shift in and shift out." The Checkers will continue their preseason schedule Monday night at Cricket Arena when they'll host the Columbia Inferno at 7:00 p.m.

In the opener Saturday, the Grrrowl jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Scott Kirton, Jason Jozsa and Ryan Hughes. Charlotte bounced back with two straight goals by Egeland and Dusty Jamieson to cut the Grrrowl lead to 3-2 after two periods. Chris Lynch made it 4-2 Greenville midway through the third period before Charlotte's Marc St. Jean scored to cut the Grrrowl lead again to one goal. Charlotte pulled goaltender David St.Germain for an extra attacker in the final 1:04 but was unable to get the equalizer. St, Germain finished the scrimmage with 15 saves. The Checkers outshot Greenville 29-19.

In the second scrimmage against the Generals, Greensboro took a 1-0 first period lead on a power-play goal by Mike Bayrack. The Checkers tied the score in the second period on an Egeland goal, and assumed their first lead of the game early in the third period on a Jeff State tally. However, midway through the third period Bayrack scored again for the Generals to tie the match at 2-2. David Delmonte's power-play goal with five minutes left in the game proved to be the game winner for Greensboro. Three goalies played the second scrimmage for the Checkers, with St. Germain playing the first period, Chris Winner the second and Geoff Derouin the third. Charlotte outshot the Generals 34-28, and which included holding Greensboro to zero shots in the second period.

In one full preseason game and two scrimmages, Egeland leads the Checkers in scoring with three goals and three assists for six points, scoring a goal and assist in each game.

NEXT PRESEASON GAME: All tickets for the Checkers / Columbia Inferno home preseason game at Cricket Arena on Monday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. are reserved and priced at $5.00. Checkers full season ticket holders will receive their tickets for free. Parking for the preseason game at Cricket Arena will be FREE for ALL fans on October 13.
