Phantoms special teams have big night

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 5-0 on the road to the Philadelphia Phantoms Wednesday. Playing in the Wachovia Center, home of their NHL affiliate, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Phantoms were 3 for 7 on the power play and 6 for 6 on the penalty kill with five different players scoring goals and 13 total posting at least one point.

Philadelphia opened the scoring early in the first period on the first power play of the game as Josh Gratton scored his first goal of the season off assists from Joni Pitkanen and Dennis Seidenberg.

The Phantoms exploded for a quartet of goals in the middle frame sandwiching a pair on the advantage around two at even strength. Freddy Meyer made it 2-0 with his second of the season off assists from Philadelphia native Tony Voce and R.J. Umberger at 6:45, Patrick Sharp upped the lead to 3-0 with his third of the year off assists from Ryan Ready and Mark Murphy at 8:33, David Printz made it 4-0 with his first of the season off assists from Ben Eager and John Slaney at 9:12 and Voce notched his fourth of the season to make it 5-0 with 40.9 seconds left in the period off assists from Seidenberg and Peter White.

Neither team scored in the third period.

Voce was the first star of the game, Phantoms Goaltender Antero Niittymaki was the second star with 22 saves and his first shutout of the season, and Seidenberg was the third star. Sound Tigers Netminder Wade Dubielewicz, who won his NHL debut at the Wachovia Center in a 4-2 Islanders' triumph over the Flyers on March 25th, made 27 saves in a losing effort. Philadelphia had a 32-22 shots on goal advantage.

The Sound Tigers will continue a stretch of five straight road games when they visit the Manchester Monarchs this Friday at 7:35 p.m. and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this Saturday in a rematch of last spring's East Division semi-final. Both games will be broadcast live on 600 WICC-AM and at www.soundtigers.com.

The five-game road swing will end when the Sound Tigers visit the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday, November 6th and the Portland Pirates on Sunday, November 7th. The Sound Tigers' next home game at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard will be Saturday, November 13th when they host the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 p.m.
