Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Mar. 24, 2013) - Sound Tigers defenseman Jordan Hill recorded his first career two-goal game, and newcomers Joey Diamond, Sean Wiles and Mike Keenan recorded their first AHL assists as Bridgeport defeated the Albany Devils 4-2 at Webster Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Sound Tigers improve to 27-26-6-5 overall. The Devils fall to 27-25-1-10 with the loss.
Hill began the season on defense, but has seen time at forward in recent weeks, and put the Sound Tigers on the board with his first goal of the game midway through the first period. Hill worked beneath the goal line and freed the puck to Keenan at the left point, who had his initial shot stopped by Devils goaltender Keith Kinkaid. However, Hill backhanded the rebound in to give the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead at 10:37 of the first period.
Sean Backman doubled the Sound Tigers advantage just 3:09 later. Diamond led the Sound Tigers into the zone on the rush during the power play, and fed Backman in the slot for a shot past Kinkaid for his 10th goal of the season.
The Sound Tigers dictated the play in the opening period, outshooting the Devils 14-5, but Albany would cut into their two-goal deficit with 23.8 seconds left in the first period when Mike Sislo beat Rick DiPietro for his ninth goal of the year.
Hill would give the Sound Tigers their two-goal cushion once again at 9:16 of the second period. Mike Halmo worked the puck free in the right corner of the Devils zone, and sent a pass in front that Hill redirected in for his second goal of the game to give the Sound Tigers a 3-1 advantage.
Strong work on the power play from the Sound Tigers forward line of Brandon DeFazio, Scott Campbell and Blair Riley led to Bridgeport's fourth goal of the night. DeFazio and Campbell won a battle along the left half-wall, and Campbell fired the puck through the slot to Wishart at the top of the right circle. Wishart sent a low wrist shot beneath Kinkaid's blocker for his fifth goal of the season, and the Sound Tigers had a 4-1 lead with 4:12 remaining in the second period.
David Wohlberg brought the Devils within two goals with 44.4 seconds left in the second period, sending a shot from the right circle over DiPietro's left shoulder during a delayed penalty call to cut Bridgeport's lead to 4-2. The Sound Tigers outshot the Devils 27-9 over the first two periods, but Albany pushed back in the third with 12 shots on goal. However, DiPietro turned aside all 12 shots he faced in the final 20 minutes, and the Sound Tigers held on for a 4-2 victory.
DiPietro made 19 saves for his fifth win in eight games with the Sound Tigers this season. Kinkaid made 27 saves in the loss for the Devils.
The Sound Tigers return to action this Thursday night when they travel to Springfield to face the Falcons at 7:00 p.m.
