Rangers Assign Defenseman Stu Bickel to Connecticut (AHL)

NEW YORK, March 24, 2013 - New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has assigned defenseman Stu Bickel to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Bickel, 26, has skated in 16 games with the Rangers this season. He registered season-highs with four hits and two shots on goal on February 21 at Ottawa, and was credited with a season-high, three blocked shots in the home opener on January 20 against Pittsburgh. Bickel made his season debut in the Blueshirts' season opener on January 19 at Boston.

The 6-4, 207-pounder has registered nine assists and 157 penalty minutes in 67 career regular season contests with the Rangers. Bickel tallied an assist while making his NHL debut on December 20, 2011, at New Jersey, and went on to record four assists and a plus-four rating in three games to begin his NHL career. He was one of seven NHL rookie defensemen to post a shorthanded point last season.

The Chanhassen, Minnesota native has skated in 144 career AHL games over four seasons with Connecticut, Syracuse, San Antonio, and Iowa, registering five goals and 16 assists for 21 assists, along with 318 penalty minutes. Bickel was acquired by the Rangers from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Nigel Williams on November 23, 2010. He was originally signed by Anaheim as an undrafted free agent on July 2, 2008.
