March 24, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
Glens Falls, NY - The Portland Pirates overcame an early deficit, only to allow 3 straight goals in the second period en route to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Adirondack Phantoms at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Portland splits the season series with the Phantoms, with each team picking up 2 victories at home during the 2012-13 season.
Adirondack would strike quickly in the first. Tye McGinn scored the game's opening goal just 9 seconds into the game to give the Phantoms the 1-0 advantage. The goal was the fastest allowed by the Pirates this season. Each team would squander power play opportunities in the first and the game remained 1-0 in favor of the Phantoms after 1.
The second period started much like the first, but with the Pirates getting the early goal. Jordan Martinook scored his 7th of the year just 25 seconds into the 2nd period to tie the game at 1. Brendan Shinnimin put the Pirates ahead at 4:18 of the second on a breakaway, his 10th of the year. The Phantoms would trail for less than 10 minutes as Jeff Dimmen tied the game on the power play, at the 13:43 mark of the second. Marcel Noebels then gave the Phantoms the lead again with 4:25 left in the second on his 10th of the season, and Eric Wellwood would add another tally with 46 seconds left in the period, giving Adirondack a 4-2 lead after two.
Portland turned up the pressure in the third but Phantoms rookie goaltender Cal Heeter was spectacular, stopping all of Portland's chances during the final frame. Heeter made 39 saves overall for the Phantom, and the third period would end without any additional scoring.
Portland falls to 35-24-3-2 on the season, but remain in 5th in the Eastern Conference with Providence and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton both idle. Mark Visentin allowed 4 goals on 18 shots in the loss in his third straight start, the first time he has started 3 consecutive games in his professional career.
The Pirates get back to action Wednesday night as they host the Providence Bruins for the final time in Portland this season. Puck drop is set for 7 PM from the Civic Center for the matchup between the top two teams in the Atlantic Division. The game can be heard on 95.5 and 95.9 WPEI in the Portland area, 92.7 and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area, and online on portlandpiratesraddio.com and AHL Live, with the pregame show starting with 6:40 with Jeff Mannix.
