Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, were defeated by the Binghamton Senators at home 4-3 in overtime on Sunday. However, the Sound Tigers reduced their playoff-clinching magic number down to four by earning a point in the standings.
Binghamton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Charlie Stephens scored his 21st goal of the season off assists from Jeff Heerema and Grant Potulny at 3:30 of the first period. The second goal then came 13 seconds later when Potulny scored his 19th tally of the year off assists from Jan Platil and Brennan Evans.
Not to be outdone, the Sound Tigers tied the game at 2-2 late in the opening frame in just a 16-second span. The first goal coming on the man advantage from Peter Tsimikalis, his second career goal and second in as many games, with Matt Koalska and Masi Marjamaki picking up assists with 1:02 left to play. Koalska then notched his 19th of the season off assists from Marjamaki and Joe Tallari with 45.8 seconds left in the period.
The Sound Tigers captured the lead at 3-2 when Ryan O'Marra scored his fourth career goal, in just his third professional game, on the power play with Jeremy Colliton assisting on the play at 3:16 into the middle frame.
As the second period expired, Platil threw the puck on net for his fifth goal of the season at the 19:59 mark with Heerema picking up an assist to tie the game at 3-3.
It was a quiet third period as neither team was able to win the game in regulation. However, the Senators pulled goaltender Billy Thompson in favor of an extra attacker with 3:35 left in regulation during a four-on-four situation but returned him to the nets when they were put shorthanded with 2:12 left on the clock.
Only 1:07 into overtime, Binghamton's Denis Hamel ripped his 51st goal of the year off feeds from Lance Ward and Evans for the final score of 4-3. Hamel notched the deciding goal to cap his 500th career AHL game.
Wade Dubielewicz stopped 24 shots for the Sound Tigers who were 2 for 11 on the power play and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill while Thompson made 19 saves for the Senators who held the 28-22 shots on goal advantage. The first star of the game was Hamel, the second was Koalska, and the third was Platil.
